190 lbs. of FUGLY

Geedubya190 lbs. of FUGLY
From time to time I end up tracking hoglets I've shot that are not DRT. Usually it's at night after dark with a flashlight in one hand, a pistol in another either hunkered down or on my hands and knees following a blood trail through juniper, over rocks and through cat claw and cactus.
Critters like this ol' boy give me pause.
I was set up Sunday night about 165 yds. away when presented with a shot on a sounder of hogs that came in just after dark thirty. I was using an xlr 250 kill light. I could see the images through my binocs but not my scope without the aid of illumination. I lit them up with the kill light. Green eyes appeared in the scope. I tried to pick out the biggest shape and let fly. I heard the "whop" and a scream. Due to my location on the side of a cliff and the terrain it takes about 30 minutes to traverse the distance between where I was located and the spot where I shot at the hogs. I got there and to my chagrin no hog DRT. There was blood trailing off into the brush. I had a head light and a 880 lumen Fenix flashlight. The blood trailed into an unusually thick section. I got to thinking. One of these days my luck is going to turn and I'm gonna come face to face with a wounded boar and it's gonna be FUGLY. I decided the better part of valor was to go back to camp and enjoy a toddy eat hot grilled fajitas and jalepeno/cheese smoke links, enjoy the campfire and lie like a rug! There's always another day and more hogs.!

WhitworthSo is that the recovered hog, Glenn?
I find the tracking part to be fun, but you absolutely have to trust your instincts and I think you made the right decision.

swampshooterI believe waiting for daylight was the prudent thing to do. That's some dandy cutters on that one. He wouldn't have much trouble turning you inside out with those.

Bobby TomekTalk about an impressive dental display...this one has it!
Good call on waiting for daylight. Like Marko noted, it's always best to heed your initial instinct. With the # of hogs you have killed, odds keep increasing that one some day will choose to seek revenge on ol' GWB.

CamoManJVery impressive Boar with tusks, GW.
I bet it's tough tracking in the country you hunt with all the rocks & brush, I doubt you have to do that often.
I enjoy your posts, thanks.
