dustofferA Good Night, Part VI
Well, 103 degrees this afternoon but after shampooing the carpet and installing new plugs and switches to match the new living room wall color I had to get away from it all. So, rolled to the ranch and got in my seat about 9:30-a bit earlier, but there was a near full moon. I took both the .22-250 and the 12-ga as I was sitting a new spot and with the bright moon, thought if they came close to me as they scattered after the shot I'd use the shotgun. 10:05 the feeder sounded "mess call" (that's "Come 'n Get It" to you non-military folks") but the pigs didn't show up until 10:35. There were 7 of them, and they appeared to be a sow and her last litter. They all bunched up under the feeder and I couldn't sort out the heads and tails until one stepped aside. So-another bang-flop. The remainder high-tailed it back the way they had come from and I could hear the fence wire singing as they hit it at a dead run. Too far for the shotgun though-so just the one. A small sow that weighed 36 lbs without guts and head, so a good BBQ piggie.

Bobby TomekGood thing you don't put notches on that 22-250. You'd be about out of wood by now.

Congrats on another piggie!

would be termed a shoat. Good eating indeed! Being corn fed, probably not much difference from store bought.

dustofferBobby--the Shiner area ought to be overrun with hogs now with you sitting out for a while--
Notches on the stock? That rifle has accounted for at least 60 pigs in the last 6 years--and 10 in the last 2 months, so it would be a little nicked up.

dustofferWent for a sit last night and all I saw was a coon, a doe, and the moon and stars. But, it was almost cool--nice breeze, no 'skeeters.

dustofferJon--I just hope the hogs last until cool weather and the wind shifts to the N & NW so I can take my bow--

dustofferBack to the stand tonight from 9 PM to 12:30 AM. Saw a doe that ate and ate and spooked when the feeder went off a second time, and saw one large (200+ lbs est) hog coming across the pasture to the feeder. It stopped behind some brush for about 10 minutes before it came closer to the feeder, but as it stuck it's head thru the wire, something spooked it and it left. I figured it would return, but 2 hours later--still no pig, so I packed it up and came home. Only thing I can figure is that one of my lights that are mounted on top of the fence posts had been broken (probably by a scratching cow) and was laying on the ground, and that wasn't what the pig was accustomed to seeing. Oh well, another good night, but not a great night!!
