Dr L. S. WirthlinFinally Used my Austrian 470 Double.. Great Hog Thumper
I have an Austrian 470 NE Double (De Schulnig) that was regulated for a handload and the load is stamped on the action. It is highly accurate. For practice loads, I followed a loading recepie that I learned from
500 Grains"In a 470 NE I have gotten the same regulation and POI as full power loads with a 500 grain lead bullet ahead of 45 grains XMP5744 powder." This had three ounces of dacron pillow stuffing over the power to keep it against the primer.
I found that this shot to the same POI as the full power loads (101gr IMR 4831 and 500 gr Woodleigh soft nose)
I used a Starling 500 grain gas checked bullet and found this had a velocity of 1571 fps.
I thought this might be a good pig thumper and my sons and I headed for a feral hog hunt.
My son shoot this one, weighing about 450 pounds at 30 yards. The bullet went under the chin and exited through the right chest. It was a bang, turnover, flop.
The other one was shot with a Blaser R93 in 30-06 and was a head shot. We cught it before it slipped into the river.

GeedubyaGreat shootin' and pix. I find that hogs make an excellent medium to test loads and bullets. The meat sure tastes better than those paper targets.

Dr L. S. WirthlinThanks Bobby; have not figured out how to post a picture.
I had seen a Pedroseli 45-70 hammer double rifle at Cabelas and was tempted but then thought my 470 might do the same with the lower load and a lead bullet. This was first bloodfor the 470

packrattusnongratusGreat gun and some gooooood eating. It sure is gratifying to know you even loaded the ammo for your hunt. Thanks for the picture. Packy

WhitworthNice work! I have used all of my big-bores on hogs -- great excuse to pull them out of the safe! Congratulations!

maddenwhYou know I tried my old Heym 470 out on my neighbors" dogs, and I sure didn't get the same reaction... they were mad as hell. I guess I should have let hem in the picture too.

Nicely done. Now, Charlotte can get back to catching flies.
Nice rifle. QD mount, or do you always have that scope on there? Can't say I blame you. Every time I try and shoot pigs, they always end up hiding behind the horses.

N E 450 No2I think with a 470 and a 500gr Solid, you could shoot through a horse and still kill a pig.

Sorry could not resist.
There is Nothing wrong with a scope on a double.

No argument here. I just think u made a very serious mistake of taking me seriously. Besides, why would anyone willing to spend thousands of dollars on a double rifle have any care for what their rifle looks like... It's all about utility right? I mean, one of those pigs could know karate... then what would we do without that quick second shot. A bolt action sure isn't fast enough for a pig that knows the praying mantis.
I'm a former owner of double rifles by the way, and I'm hopefully a future owner of multiple double rifles.

Dr L. S. WirthlinMaddenwh.. it was great to finally ise that particular double. I have a scope with claw mounts that comes off easily. It shoots to the same point of aim as the open sights but with age, the scope is great for older eyes.
My son shot this and aimed a little low under the snout as a head on shot. I was impressed that the Starling 500 grain lead bullet went clean through the thick neck and out the right chest, This pig hunting may prove addictive.
Doc,
good on you, looks like you had some fun with your 470,I have shot pigs with a 470 & cast bullets,it is just plain fun,I am a little concerned with your load though,5744 is not made to work with a filler, check in the double rifles forum, there have been a couple of serious incidents with 5744,myself I have shot reduced loads such as yours but no filler,I moved on to full house loads with lighter bullets for the pig hunts.

Dr L. S. WirthlinBill73 Thanks for the note about 5744. I had actually done a bit of research in the past about this powder and the use of dacron fillers and found the opiones by good people split.
I did go back and found a long thread last year about problems with 5744 and fillers. I have not had any trouble myself.
Tony, if you are still follwoing this thread; what do you currently think? Have seen your posts in the past.
Thanks

N E 450 No2Doc
I have never used 5744. However those in the DRSS that do do not use fillers as far as I know.
Try it withouf fillers, If you do not get any hangfires you are good to go.
You might have adjust the powder charge a little to regain regulation.
Since they closed the Gun Club [shame it was really nice], what range are you using now?

Dr L. S. WirthlinTony.. I guess it will be back to the drawing board for another light load for the 470 although the one I used here worked really well and shoots to the same point of aim as a full power load.
I have not found a good range uet. Hendersons is ok but user unfriendly and the police can tie it up for a week at a time. There is another very nice range in the West Valley area.. I think Lee K but the hours there are also different. When i went there druing the day, they were closed.
I miss our old range. Should be getting the dured meat soon and will let you know how it tastes.
