dustofferStarting Over
Ok-I think the hogs hacked my other threads so I’m starting anew. Warm but not hot, wind from the right direction except I am downwind of a chicken grow-out house meaning a couple of thousand chickens’ deposits are wafting by. I am optimistic enough that I put my lift in the truck to weigh the big boy.

dustofferWell tonight it was good luck for me and bad luck for him---the "big boy" showed up about 10:45 and died very shortly thereafter. 227 lbs on the scale.
Been after him for a while--

Bobby TomekNice! Perseverance pays off!
Glad you were able to burn some powder. The only "rooters" we've seen have been armadillos in the yard. Grady (one of the twins) took care of one tonight. A 12 gauge from 6 yards makes a heck of a mess.

Normally we use a .22 LR, but this one was spooked and ran into the pasture just outside the yard, where the grass is about a foot tall in spots. So Grady opted for the old 870.
Congrats again on the bruiser boar!
Oh, on the weight guessing: You gave him a lengthy death row reprieve, so he gained 6 pounds in the process with fresh dewberries and corn haha! So can I amend my guess of 221 to 227?

Bobby

dustofferBobby---you get a win on weight guessing. Worst thing about tonight was dragging him out of the pen---I couldn't and I don't consider myself a weakling. Finally hooked the tow rope up and dragged him out with the truck.

dustofferCharlie64--I don't know about age and won't until I get a look at his teeth and check how worn they are. Not a lot of studies done on aging hogs by teeth wear but given his size, if his teeth aren't worn really badly, I'm guessing middle age--3-4 and if badly worn, 5+. However this is just an unscientific guess.

georgeldHot dog, about time you got this one.
Is that long tail normal there?
Know you had at least one without a tail
awhile back.
When I was a young kid, Dad bought "Rosie"
to fatten up. Mom and I went to feed her
and she got into the feed shed. Mom pulled
on the tail and pulled it off. I don't
recall butchering her. Just the feeding and
tail pulling deal.
Congrats Dusty!

dustofferBeen a week tomorrow since I killed the big one--went back today to check cameras--not a single pig picture except the one I killed in 7 nights at two different feeders. Looks like we won this battle, but we know the war is still on.

dustofferCharlie64---found a web site that has some info on aging boars by tooth eruption and wear. I need to take a closer look tomorrow to check wear on M2 and M3 (2nd and 3rd molars) but I'm saying this guy was 36-48 months old.
Here is the web site:
https://www.aphis.usda.gov/wil...ging-feral-swine.pdfCleaned up the 3rd molars a bit with a stiff brush and got the magnifying glass out---those 3rd molars do show wear, so upping my age estimate/guess to 48+
He also had some of the longest tusks I've seen on any hogs I've shot.
