Got this big ole sow at one of my feeders a couple of evening ago. She came in at about 75 yards and the Model 71 just naturally pointed to the right place. .348 slugs do a job on hogs.

Karoo: For those not familiar with the Winchester Model 71. It is an update of the Model 1886, stronger steel, etc. In 20 years of manufacture only 47,000 or so were made. It was only offered in one chambering - 348 Winchester. Browning made a limited run a few years ago but only offered in, you guessed it, 348 Winchester. No other manufacturer has ever made a gun for this round.

I do load for it but only one bullet as I have never felt the urge to experiment with this particular fire arm.

The load I have settled on is the Hornady 200 gr Flat Point bullet (#3410)ahead of 50 gr of 4064 powder with the Winchester Standard LR Primer. No pressure signs in my gun and the brass lasts forever.

The Model 71 is not the only Lever Action I hunt with. I have a couple of Savage 99's. One of them is chambered in the venerable 300 Savage. I use it a lot as I think it is almost ideal as a deer cartridge.

I was hunting in one of my favorite creek bottoms last fall when a sounder of maybe 10-12 hogs fed through scarfing up acorns. I managed to get 4 of them with 5 shots - lever actions let you take additional shots quickly.

Lots of pork and lots of work getting them out and processing them.

Now that's stacking them up!
