hunting with out the dogs again
Had a little shower Sat. afternoon. I thought there might be some hogs rooting in the pasture because of it so I made a little round with my Ruger 7x57 Mauser. Didn't see anything moving about so I climbed into a deer stand and waited for le couche' de solaire. Just before night fell in earnest a pig popped up way down the pasture trail from the stand. Well over 300 yds and moving fast in the opposite direction. I had put some corn soaked in diesel in the woods but it had been eaten out the night before, but this hog was moving fast in that direction.

I started to wait for the hog to turn so I might get a broadside shot, as all I had presented to me was its rear end. Finally decided to take what I had because he was only getting further out there. I let a 140 gr. 7mm slug fly and the hog to my amazement went down at the shot.

Got to him and found the bullet had broke his back. I put another in him behind the ear and that was that. Went back the next morning and took the photo.

The dogs are a bit peeved that they are being left out.

Nice pig, nice story. Obviously, you didn't need the dogs.

Corn soaked in diesel? Do you eat the pigs that have been on a diet of that?

Thanks Marco, luck had it's part to play in this episode.

Grenadier, I am not collecting pork any more, that's done. Just trying to help out the cattleman by removing these hogs. Hogs love diesel soaked corn and other critters don't, so it goes further.

Good shooting Larry ! When do the dogs get to go out again ?

Love the Ruger No 1 you have there. Always wanted to try one.

We are off to Namibia next week for a few days - wingshooting and hopefully a pig !

Cheers

If the weather is decent, I think I'll take the dogs out in the morning. We've been blessed with heavy rains of late.

The Ruger #1 is known to have hanger problems for the forearm, making some a project. This one was and is a shooter right out the box. Love the 7mm Mauser.

Let us know the hunt turns out Charlie.

It's good to be lucky or sometimes just due.

Thanks Bobby and Juan!

Was at my fishing camp last week, fishing is almost as much fund as pig hunting. Sometimes more really. Going to Louisiana tomorrow to do some Red Drum fishing. Might not sleep tonight thinking about it.

Good luck on the fishing, and here's hoping the both the weather and fish cooperate. Don't forget to post some pictures when you get back!
