30-30 vs Boar
I have been plagued by hogs rooting in my pastures over the last few years, and it started again a couple of weeks ago. During this time, I made many trips at all hours of the day and night trying to catch the culprits in the act, and Monday evening I hit pay dirt. I pulled up to headlight the pasture and hit this big black hog with the beams. He was making every effort to get to the nearest thicket as I found him in my crosshairs. BOOM! FLOP!
He didn't make it. The shot was 150 yards with the hog quartering away at a full run, and I aimed at the end of his snout at ear level. I hit him an inch behind and under his left ear, and I was using my Marlin 336SS topped with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9 and Hornady LeverEvolution ammo. I am sold on the ammo, and this makes my 8th animal with it.
I was checking my game cameras this morning and got a picture of an even larger hog from last night, but it had not rooted in my pasture yet.

I have killed many hogs, and in the perfect world where everything goes just right, yes, a 22 lr will definitely kill a hog just as dead as a bazooka. BUT, we don't live in a perfect world, and given even the slightest margin of error, I would not even consider trying. I believe that matching the "appropriate" caliber/load to the game you are hunting to give a clean humane kill is the least we should do as hunters and sportsmen out of respect for our quarry.

Well said Jeff. I like to use calibers that will kill under all conditions.

The 30-30 is fine for hogs....too many big bore fanatics here that ruin a lot of meat.

Big Bores definitely aren't necessary, but they're fun. Gotta say that from what I've seen, some of the smaller hyper-velocity magnums seem to do more meat damage than big-bores.

Nice Razor Back Jeff! Makes me want to get out in the field. Sometimes I wish I had the same problem with hogs rooting up my yard. Boom Flop! Love it!

I consider the 30-30 adequate for hogs, I have shot a lot of them with the .25-35 and about every other caliber..My sisters ranch is over run with hogs, they are really getting to be a problem. I consider the .308 and ideal hog gun,but have shot a lot of them with the .222 as have all my kids.
