Knife hunting in Argentina

JefferyDenmarkKnife hunting in Argentina
Gentlemen
Her it goes.
Juan and I was coming down a mud road a spotted these three little piggy.
The first one got 535 grn of Australian Woodleigh high in the shoulder dead on the spot.
The dogs where fast on to the next one and I was in hot pursuits with my Cold steel trail master ready to draw blood.
The big Dogo Lanhuel stopped the hog real fast and fought him a bit before I was there to assist him with the stab to the hart.
After killing the second hog the dogs and I was off to get the third. We ran about 200 meters and then the hog stopped to face the music.
The dogs moved in on the hog and but the hog fought back well. When I came to the action area the hog was facing me I went in to assist the dogs, but at that point I tripped in the mud and was sitting on my ass in the ditch. At that point the hog charged me and had it not been for Lanhuel the big DOGO whom felt the danger and gave itself 100% in a 55 kg dogo charged biting the hogs face and just giving me the split second I needed to get on my feet and stab the SOB in the hart to take care of business.
As you can see from the look on my face this was an awesome hunt and hunting with Juan Pozzi and his monster killer dog Lanhuel is something very special. EXTREME HUNTING at its finest.
Cheers,
André

WhitworthAndre -- excellent stories and pictures! Great boars! So I guess that hunting with Juan Pozzi gets your endorsement! Did you by chance weigh any of these monsters? It's not important, I'm just curious. Excellent work.

Hunting with Juan Pozzi is the real deal if you want some EXTREME HUNTING and good times.
I do not know the weigth of the boars. About 3 hours after I killed them they where part of a feast for the hunters involved in the hunt.
ASADOS Argentinian style.

André

the_captainSounds like an incredible trip! Very nice hogs, and some excellent memories for you. Congratulations! It sounds like you killed all three of these boars within minutes of each other. How long did it take from the first shot to the last stab?

RattlesnakerIt's always easy to tell which hand stuck the hog...the one with blood up to the elbow. I always try to explain to first time "stickers" that you will definitely know when you've hit the heart with your knife. Blood just explodes out of the hog. I have a picture of a guy that stuck his first hog about a month ago and he had his face down close to the hog when he pushed the knife in. His face was immediately covered with blood once he hit the sweet spot.
Looks like you guys had a great time. Congrats on a successful hunt.

500grainsGreat story!
Have you ever heard of anyone suffering a wrist injury when stabbing a hog, such as due to twisting of the knife (assuming the hog decides not to stand still)?
04 April 2005, 21:43
JefferyDenmarkWhen I stabed all the hogs I keept the knife in the beast until it was dead. I pump the knife up and down cutting the hart into pieces.
Cheers,
André

ErikDVery cool story and pictures André.
You must have testicles of steel! And it's a good thing too, cause if that boar had gotten to you while you were down on your ass he would have had your balls for breakfast!

Looks like you really deserved that piggy dinner in the evening!

eyedocOnly eight weeks till me and my merry band make the trip down for some buffalo and pig sticking. After seeing the report of this trip I am even more enthusiastic than before.
We seldom get to choose
But I've seen them go both ways
And I would rather go out in a blaze of glory

I'm not sure how some of these other guys do it but we usually have at least 2 guys there when we are trying to kill a hog. One jumps in and grabs the hind legs, effectively immobilizing the hog, while the other stabs the hog in the heart. The tough part is generally the first guy getting in and grabbing the hind legs. They have very little power with their front legs and a neck with very little lateral movement, thus preventing too many missteps if approached from a rear 4 o'clock or 8 o'clock angle. This of course assumes that the dogs were able to catch the hog...if they can't or won't, then this creates a very different and more dangerous scenario.
05 April 2005, 04:46
WhitworthDamn, now I'm all fired up. Before I had very little interest in knife hunting as I am quite fond of my thunder sticks, but I have got to try it now!

The knife is pushed in above the elbow and is pumped up & down to cut the large arterys. As posted prior the blood gushes out of the boar and the die quite instantly. I use a puma white hunter with the back blade honed razor sharp so I get two cuting surfaces.
If you can't smell his breath, your're not close enough!

OldsargeDammit, you whippersnappers are gettin' my aging blood pressure all overwrought. Maybe I should try this with UltraMag in Hawaii before I head down to Juan's for the big time. I think her piggies are a bit more bite size.

RattlesnakerHere are the two knives that I use to stick pigs. Most recently I use the coldsteel because I'm afraid of losing my stag handle knife. My dad gave it to me when I was 16 and it has stuck hundreds of hogs over the years. I like the coldsteel due to the slim double edged design. It slides in between a boar's ribs very easily. Also, the length of the blade is very helpful when you are on a big hog.

I will post to you some Aussie pig hunting magazines. Lots of crazy guys (and girls!) like you, here.
Dogging the piggies is very popular.
Aye, Bravo!
Lacking the good dogs, I'll have to stick to the spear. It was exciting enough to hold onto a Cold Steel Boar Spear as the piggie impaled himself on it, from neck to heart. Do I have to go to Argentina to find such a grand outfit? How many knives will a Tuff Pak hold?

UltraMagAndre, Thanks! Stab it Dog and Knife Hunting is a way of Life in Hawaii. The hunting here is good it all depends where you hunt and what Island you hunt on. Congratulations on your hunt with Juan I can relate to it as I do it alot here looks like very different terrain though. Maybe I can make it over to Argentina one day to hunt some Boars with Dog and Knife!!!
Whitworth, Yes the "Red Dirt" as we call it is very noticeable here LOL! We caught that particular boar in the mountains behind Tripler Army Medical Center the "Big Pink Hospital" if you ever been to Oahu you cant miss it.

10 April 2005, 16:58
WhitworthUltraMag -- it reminds me a bit of the Kahukus (sp? - it's been a long time!). Spent a lot of time humping up and down the hills there and it took an aweful lot of work to wash the red dirt out of all of your gear. Yes, I know Tripler -- except we used to call it Crippler -- spent some time there after breaking my shoulder. You hunt hogs near Tripler and where else on Oahu?

A tropical Valkyrie indeed, especially with the braids.

11 April 2005, 14:23
UltraMagWhitworth, Yeah you spelled Kahuku correctly in fact one of the meanest boars my boyfriend and his dad ever caught came from there it only weighed 165 pounds but killed 6-7 of thier dogs and cut up my boyfriend pretty bad before he finally stabbed and killed it his dad had to stitch him up on the spot to stop all the bleeding the best part was he was only 12 yrs old at the time. He stabbed his 1st boar (155# dressed) when he was 4, hunting boar w/ Dog and Knife alone since age 8 to say its his passion is an understatement he has some REALLY CRAZY hunting stories about hunting boars with dog and knife.
And yes we still call it CRIPPLER!!!LLLOOOLLL!!! I mostly hunt hogs at Tripler and Moanalua Valley which is right next to Tripler but also Waimano,Helemano,Kawailoa,Kuoakala,Pahole,Kaala,Schofield and a couple of other spots but only once in awhile.
Sarge, We'll have you jumping in there and giving them hogs the "Blade" in no time and yes the adrenaline rush is pretty intense especially on a big boar. You sound like a funny guy to hunt with. Right now we have a wild dog problem so the hogs have moved out. A friend of mine just caught a 100# Boar with 4 1/2" tusk yesterday lucky guy.
Juan, How would I go about hooking up a Dog and knife hunt with you?
Thanks for the exchange guys if you guys have any questions about Hawaii let me know i'll do my best to answer them.
