Radioactive Boar on the Rise in Germany

tin canRadioactive Boar on the Rise in Germany
As Germany's wild boar population has skyrocketed in recent years, so too has the number of animals contaminated by radioactivity left over from the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown. Government payments compensating hunters for lost income due to radioactive boar have quadrupled since 2007. It's no secret that Germany has a wild boar problem. Stories of marauding pigs hit the headlines with startling regularity: Ten days ago, a wild boar attacked a wheelchair-bound man in a park in Berlin; in early July, a pack of almost two dozen of the animals repeatedly marched into the eastern German town of Eisenach, frightening residents and keeping police busy; and on Friday morning, a German highway was closed for hours after 10 wild boar broke through a fence and waltzed onto the road.http://www.spiegel.de/internat...,1518,709345,00.html14 August 2010, 02:14
KabluewyPerhaps with all that radiation, they may mutate into a species that glows in the dark.

perryInteresting. This whole "disaster" turned out to be a mass media pant crapping fest. To date the number of infected and dead is in the low hundreds. I guess the pigs soaked up all the radiation. You gotta give it to the german hunters, they know how to work the system.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.
NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.
I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

DukescavThat is why if I get the chance during the day, I shoot the dark colored hogs so that any with white or light markings will show up better at night when you are trying to get the crosshairs on them...lol

teddyinmdVery interesting!
But, why did no one tell us, that threre is money waiting for the meat we shoot? Seems to be a hoax. That source (spiegel online) is known for anti-hunting / anti-gun propaganda.
The only reliable information I found on the site of the ministry of environment: a research on how the effects of chernobyl show after twenty years - and object of measurement were meat of wild boar taken in bavaria, which the researchers had to pay for.

BaxterBI understood it was due to the radiation retained by the wild mushrooms and the hogs ate the mushrooms and got the radation. Dunno, but it may put a dent in my jaeger-schitzel and rauch-schinken eating next time in GErmany...

georgeldWhile I was in Germany in '71-72, we spent a month three times at the big military post" Graf, re: Grafenwier, where Romel was hq'd in WWII.
I ran a water supply station on a creek with a big aircompressor powered pumps I just tossed out in the crik. It would fire up two pumps real easy and make the 4" water hose stiffen up quick enough it would knock a man over if he got hit with it.
As we were out there for many long stretches and over night a few times for fire fighting refills. THe wild pigs raided my food cach and milk crate. I sent a backup man out on his open topped grader one time. Several good sized hogs "treed" Jim on the grader. Even as a farm kid from Oregon he was spooked over the deal. they even punctured a grader tire for him.
Tracks were all over the place everytime I went out there. Only saw a few small one's twice and they were running off.
There wasnt' supposed to be any hunting on the post in those days.
