A pig from last Saturday
Hog Hunt near Gatesville, Texas. Well, the pigs were scarce. We saw a lot of coons, deer, turkeys, and a possum with a baby or her back. And it was also very HOT! 100+ degrees. My hunting partner, Jared and I walked to the creek Saturday about 1930 and jumped several deer and turkeys. We were looking down the creek and I saw a pig around 220 yards away. I thought we might be able to get closer by traveling parallel to the creek on the high ground and all of a sudden 10 or so started crossing the creek. There wasn't time for a stalk as they were running up the opposite bank. I knelt for a steadier shot with my 375 JDJ. The crosshairs were high on her back above her shoulder when I squeezed the trigger. We heard a wack when the bullet hit and Jared saw her go down. We had to climb very carefully down the steep bank and walk down the creek. We found the spot where she was hit and a good blood trail going up the bank. We walked up the bank looking and lost the blood trail. Jared stepped down on the creek bed to see if he could find where the blood trail went. I turned around and the pig was literally 5 feet from where we climbed up the bank. We missed seeing her because we were so focused on the blood. The autopsy showed a broken off shoulder with a shredded heart. First blood with my 375 JDJ. We had a hell of a time getting to it with my 4-wheeler. I had to go down a steep cow trail and my drive belt got wet and started slipping. We had to pull the 4-wheeler back up the bank along with the pig.

This pic shows where I was standing when I shot. The pig was left at the small bush in the center of the creek.

Good shooting, and a nice pig.

What bullet were you using, and at what velocity?

NICE piggie and even better shooting! thumb

I, too, am interested in the load you were using as much of my hunting is with various TCs.

We saw a lot of coons

This past June I was hunting hogs in Texas and DAMN! If I didn't see about forty coons during the three days I was down there! I was half tempted to blast a few of em with my .470 NE, but thought less of it after I calculated the cost per trigger pull on a coon.

Great pictures, nice hog and gun. Thanks for posting. Makes me want to get my Encore out and get it sited in, it happens to be in 6.5,-.284. I bet at the price of corn these days the temptation to shoot the coons must have been almost over-whelming. Congratulations on a fine hog.

Just kidding, of course. With very few folks trapping anymore, raccoon populations have soared in many areas. I hope to put about 100 or more of their pelts in the freezer over the course of a week or two this winter.

We did run a few over with the pick-up, and NE450No2 did blast a few that we pried out of a feed shoot one evening with his handgun - good times!

I would have shot those SOBs, but it was early the first day of the hog hunt, and I didn't want to scare away any potential hogs with a sound of a .470 NE going off right at day break.

Having just got back from South Africa in May, I will second that. BTW, Lorenzo, that pine plantation where you had the trail cam looks a lot like mine in Louisiana.
