Only thing better than an early one!
Been seeing a big boar at my place but he comes after mid night! Decided to take my ammo can with a blanket and layer up well and sit late. Hoping he shows up before midnight because it is really cold. This place is fully brushed up! Only way to get around is some old seismic right of ways and one electric line right of way. I chose to use the electric line because I could put my feeder on the East side and the tower on the West side. Wind does not blow from the West often here. Problem is I have to drive my ATV within 35 yards of the feeder before snaking through the brush to the tower. I cut and hacked a lane to the feeder so I can back my truck up to fill the feeder.
Felt the 7 Mag was right, parked at the pen realized I left my binos at the house. Oh well, going anyway. Got half way there and forgot my blanket, went back and got it. Went by the feeder and kind of glance over my shoulder at the pen, saw nothing. Got in the tower and there was a black spot that should not have been there! Put a shell in the chamber and looked, sure enough a black pig! He turned, dead black boar, maybe 200#
Too many clothes, sweated wet dragging him off! This just does not happen often! I was back home before the feeder went off! Notice the taught, well done fence!

You didn't want to sit up late in the cold anyway, did you? That ol' boy was just being considerate.

Good hog!

Mighty hard to beat a shot like that.
even leaking out the sinus cavity.
What was the range?

Long as the wires still up that's what counts
on a fence. Too many get shot and left broken.

Thanks for sharing,

George

Actually the shot was in the shoulder. The blood just ran to the ear. 100 yards, about the longest I could hack out on this place. Soil here is full of rocks, I could not dig post holes for wood corner posts! I used tee posts, cut off tee posts and wire to anchor them. Next day heifers got in the pen and tried to tear it down to get out! It never did stretch back right. I have shot wires in two 4 times and that does not help!

Live Oak:

Funny you mention fence building. One time back in the '60s three of us contracted to build a "straight 10 mile drift fence for our BLM". Damn the rocks!!

Funny part. One of the guys had an old WWII Dodge Power Wagon we used. Some of the area nearly stood on end, lots of heavy oak brush. We'd gone down to the supply pile for a load and crawled up the hill about 3/4 mile. Had barely gotten back to work when the inspector came walking up. "would you please bring that mountain goat down and pull my Jeep off the brush? I tried to follow you up but the brush just picked it up off the ground". Fun times on the job for once.

George, I was wondering who was crazy enough to contract to build those drift fences!

Hi Bill:

One was the rancher that joined the BLM for about 3/4 mile. The other guy had just retired and had the hill climber.

Don't know about them, that was my only time on such a fence. Paid real well for the time. Well earned though, count on that part.

Being around the farms and ranches much of my life I've built a lot of fences back when.
