Bobby Tomeklarge sow vs. 30-30 AI Contender
I am fighting a migraine this morning so will add some details later. But here is how a matchup between a large sow and a 30-30 AI went late last night. Suffice to say, it didn’t end well for the piggie. The large sow went about 25 yards after the shot but wound up going downhill into some of the thickest stuff you can imagine. We had to wait for daylight to make the retrieval, but the temp was in the 30s, so the meat was fine for those couple of hours.
My hands are absolutely pulverized from dealing with all the vines and thorns in that little jungle, and I even have some thorns in my scalp (not much hair there to protect it

). I learned my lesson a couple years ago about trying to go in there in the dark as an old goat with mobility issues like myself has no business even attempting a stunt like that. Heck, that area is rough on a young person in good shape.

DesertRamNice piggy - quite the fatty! I have a .30-30 AI, but in a 13" pistol barrel. I shoot 125 grain NBTs with very similar results. Interestingly enough, the only thing to stop one of those bullets so far was a ~100 pound pig.

jawheelerThats a nice one. Any idea how much it weighs?
08 December 2010, 00:49
Bobby TomekIt was not weighed, but because of its girth, the fact tht it was rolling fat -- not to mention carrying 11 piglets -- I'd have to say 215 to maybe 220 pounds. This hog, though, did not have much in the way of body length, another factor I considered in the estimate.
The photo really doesn't show its exceptional girth, but in that jungle, that was the best I could do...
