My First Boar
Killed my first boar on Sunday. Went with one of my customers who is in a large club in the middle of the swamp. We were deer/hog hunting so I was ready for anything. Got in the stand about 3:30 pm and didn't see a thing. At 5:40 pm it was getting DARK and I had taken my face mask off 10 minutes earlier and was just waiting on my host to come get me. All of a sudden, I heard movement behind me to the left. Didn't know if it was a deer or a pig but finally I made out the shape of a large hog ambling through the thick stuff maybe 50 yards away. I tried my best to get a clear view through the little Nikon 2-7X32 but the moving animal combined with the dark and brush just wasn't working out. Finally, he angled away and went into the creek about 80 yards away where he wallowed in the water and raised a ruckus. It was cool just to listen to it and I had no thoughts of getting a chance at him. All of a sudden, at about 5:50, he got out of the creek and it sounded like he was coming back my way. There was a shooting lane directly in front of the stand and I could see the large blob heading in that direction. I put my rifle on the rail and tried to focus on the fading crosshairs. Finally, as if on cue, the hog stepped right into the crosshairs at about 50 yards and I pulled the trigger of the Ruger #1 .338 Federal. The muzzle flash totally blinded me but I heard the pig squeal and thrash around for a few seconds and then all was silent. I slowly got down, took my flashlight out and slowly walked towards him. Sure enough, he was lying right where he stood. The 185 gr Federal PSP had performed admirably. When my buddy came to me, he was happier than I was. He is a veteran hog hunter and he was thrilled for me to get my first one. It was no fun dragging the beast out of that swamp, dodging cypress kneees and fallen trees but we finally got him out. He weighed 210 lbs but he felt like 610!

Well done. That Hog has Nice Hair..

I just hope you butchered him and kept the meat.

I hage kikked dozens of wild pigs, I have never been able to tell the difference between a sow and a 300lb boar as to the quality of the cooked meat.

As a Plus the boars have pig oysters...MMMM Good.
