I have an older Leupold Vari-XII 2-7 that is 11 inches long and has 1-1/2" objective and occular bell diameters. This is my favorite scope and I plan on mounting it on my 375 H&H in Leupold QR rings/bases.

I have another 11 inch Vari-XII 2-7 with 1-1/4" objective bell and I just don't like it as well. I don't know what the differences are in these models.

Are the VX-1 rugged enough for this application as well? What are folks opinions of the VX-1? I have one in 4-12 on my 223 and it seems great. Any other recomendations?

Your Vari-X II with the smaller objective is the older scope. It has a lens that is 28mm in diameter. The scope with the larger objective is a Vari-X IIc, which has an objective lens of 33mm. This is identical to the VX-I. In fact, the VX-I is, for all practical purposes, the same scope as the Vari-X IIc. It will hold up under recoil just fine. In fact, anecdotally, there seem to be fewer recoil-related failures with the I's and II's than with the III series.

Your problem with your model 70 may be ring spacing. You may or may not have to have offset rings (depending on which bases and mounts you use) in order to use the relatively short tube of a Leupold 2-7 VX-I or IIc.

And yes, this is a very appropriate scope for a .375. It has a very wide field of view for short/fast shooting at the low end, and at 7x has plenty of magnification for shooting at as long a range as you would wish. I have a Leupold 2-7 on my .375 H&H which is serving me well.

Stonecreek is right on the money.

Just be sure and take your time in mounting the scope. Make certain the screw holes are void of any grease/oil or debris, and be sure to use Lok-Tite or something similar to help secure everything.

Unfortunately, many so-called scope failures could have been avoided had proper mounting procedures been followed -- and that especially rings true with heavy kickers.

For a 375 I'd give some thought to the VX-III 1.5-5 scope. It has enough magnification for anything you will hunt with a 375, very forgiving eye relief, and an absolutely awesome field of view. VX-IIIs are on sale right now and you should be able to find one at a good price.

Ring spacing isn't an issue with my model 70's. The Leupold QD's for H&H mags actually have more leeway than the QD's on my standard caliber Win 70's.

So the 28mm is older. I wondered what the difference was. It has more leeway for forward and aft movement as well because of the bell taper, but it is not nearly as bright as my favorite little 2-7 Leupold 33mm.

I get trade discounts and have been kicking around getting a new VX1 2-7 for my other 30-06 @ $172.80 but was also considering a new or used VX-III or Vari-XIII in 1.5-5x or 1.75-6x for the H&H. I am probably putting my favorite little Vari-XII 2-7 (33mm) on my H&H and getting the VX-I for my 30-06. Thanks

There are a couple of differences in your 28mm Vari-X II and your 33mm Vari-X IIc, but the most noticeable is the bell diameter. Leupold also changed the way the reticle lens mounts so that the IIc has a little more adjustment range than the earlier II.

Any of the scopes you mention will do fine on your .375. If you should decide on the VX-III 1.5-6, be sure to get the extended tube model since the shorter one is VERY short and is hard to mount on your M70 even with the forgiving mounts you have.

I have a gun that for a couple of reasons really NEEDS one of the older 28mm scopes. If you'd like to sell/trade your 28mm scope, drop me a PM.

I'd put almost any reasonable Leupold (or better) scope on that gun BUT the 1.5-5x20mm. That 20mm lense really cuts down on light transmission in low light, been there, done that. I'll be the first to admit that a lot of people like them, I don't and I've used one quite a bit.

I have a 1.75 x 6 extended with heavy cross hairs on my 400H&H* and it works great. Look at the heavy hairs..........I was very impressed at dusk and dawn, and how they "center" on game.

I have the Leupold Vari X III 1.75-6 X 32 Heavy Duplex reticle in Leupold QR mounts on my M70 .375 H & H. In my opinion this approaches perfection for this caliber.

Couldn't agree more, I had a M70 converted to a .375 Ruger. Rifle started life as a 7mm Rem Mag, and I just wanted something a little different. I used VXIII standard duplex in QRW rings on mine but I have to agree it is the near perfect scope for my rifle.

I have a many Leupold scopes, including 2 VX I shotgun scopes with heavy reticles. One of them is mounted on my Sako 375 H&H and I find it ideal for close cover to 200+ yards. Lou

I have same rifle with a ziess conquest 2.5x8-32, great eye relief ,very good glass for the money ,the z plex reticle is thick on the sides for low light but very thin in the center for precise shots, also i did not have to use extended rings from talley, good luck

I have a vx1 2-7x32 on my M0 in 375. It has held up ok but requires offset rings which slighly block loading port. Doesn't bother me but some people would find it unsatisfactory.

I also have the Vari-x III 1.75-6x32 on my Remington Classic 375H&H but only because the Conquest 2.5-8 hadn't been introduced yet. The combination looks and functions very well.

But if I did it again I'd change the whole thing - rifle to a model 70 and the scope to Conquest 2.5-8 to take advantage of the calibers flexibility and because I like the Conquest better.
