I bought a nice little mauser awhile back that came with a cheap Tasco scope and some weaver style bases and rings. I was talking to the guy at the store and he was saying they got the rifles from an estate sale of a former customer. He said the guy would buy all sorts of rifles, but always put the cheapest scopes on them.

I bought a new scope to replace the old Tasco and I'm thinking I need to buy new rings. The rings it came with have no name or label on them, but appear to be the NcStar rings. Never heard of this company, but the rings cost under $10 so I'm skeptical of their reliability.

I'm curious if anyone has heard of these rings and/or used them? Should I use these rings or upgrade? What would you recommend (must be for Weaver bases)? If I do upgrade the rings, I need something that is a good balance between cost and reliability. Is there anything reliable in the sub-$20 range?

Anything NcStar is pretty much junk. $20 really restricts you.

If the bases truly are Weaver then you might okay. I would then put a set of Burris Zee rings on...I think they are $21.

I never liked the Weaver Rings that use the screws on only one side but that could be an option for less than $20.

Butch, I had seen those and was curious about them. Any personal experience with them? I read you want to throw out the screws they come with and get some new ones from Home Depot.

had no problems with them at all. i had alot of ring slippage on my old 50 until iput them on it and then no problems - that sorta sold me on them. i can see where screw problems could come in though. with 2 straps and 4 screws on each ring it would be really easy to overtorq them.

I like both Burris Z rings and Millett Angle Loc rings for Weaver bases. The original Weaver rings work just fine and are actually very stout, but their homely looks and mixed aluminum/steel construction do nothing to enhance the appearance of your rifle.

I used some off-brand (probably Chinese) rings just last night to mount a scope. They are built on the same principal as the Burris Z rings. Although not as well finished as the Burris, I saw nothing wrong with the rings and they seem quite sturdy and trued up nicely.

I wouldn't necessarily depend so much on the brand or the origin as in they eyeball judgment of the utility of the scope rings. The "major" companies mostly sub out the manufacture of their scope rings, so they may come off of the same line as an "NC Star".
