Need help, maybe a "scope rings 101" course
I just purchased a Rem model 700 Classic in .308 and was wondering how to go about selecting the right rings for the gun. I'm assuming it depends on the scope to be mounted but I'm not sure. I've heard that Redfield mounts fit well on the Remington's. I'm looking at the Leupold VXII in 3x9/40 with LRD ret. or the Zeiss Conquest 3x9/40. What are the options? How do you select mounts? I don't want to screw up on the mount choice. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Leupold has a mount selector guide on their site. If you were to make a mistake it's either going to be not getting the right height of ring or needing a extension ring or base and getting a standard. I'm betting somebody here as the combos you're looking at and can tell you what they used. I'd bet on the short action you won't need an extension ring or base and medium height rings will work. I'd get a redfield type mount, Leupold or Burris will be the easiest to find.

There is a chart in the back of the Leupold catalog that tells you specifically which height rings you need for each scope on each action.

FWIW, Burris does the same thing.

Burris Signature rings are available for a lot of different base types. They require no lapping of the rings for optimal alignment/contact.

Thanks for the replies.......I've heard a lot of good things about the Burris rings.
