Red Dots and Magnification

analog_peninsulaRed Dots and Magnification
Hi there,
I've been thinking about buying an Aimpoint 9000, but am undecided on whether to buy the 1x or the 2x version. I have a 1x UltraDot and like it well enough, but it is at its best at ranges under 40 yards. I've used it at 50 yards and it does a decent job, but I can't help but think that a little magnification might be a good thing.
Has anyone used one of the red dot scopes with a bit of additional magnification (2x - 3x) and how did they like them? Did the additional magnification hurt short range target acquisition?

perryI don't mean this sarcasticlly at all, do you have eye sight problems? Your 1x ought to be good out to 150 yards at least. If you cant do that with a red dot I'd suggest getting a variable scope with a lit reticle.

analog_peninsulaMy vision is so-so. I'm probably going to have laser surgery in January or February.
I'm pretty familiar with the 1x behavior; I want to know if the 2x works well, or whether the change in magnification is a visual distraction.

browningguyI just put a Truglo 2X red dot on one of my .223's. I'm very happy with it, accuracy is much improved. I also went from a 5moa dot to a 2.5moa dot so that probably helps a bit.
In short, it's better for me, no issues with reduced field of view, and you can still shoot it with both eyes open.

perryI have used the 1x with the 3x magnifier and did not like it at all. The optics were not very good. I would imagine they are the same as the optics in the 2x scopes but I don't know that for a fact. I have had the Lasik and my vision is 20/15. I can use my 4 moa Aimpoint out to 200 yards while keeping my groups under 3" and heart/lunging a deer or hog is easyday to 250. Meopta makes a pretty good illuminated scope in a 1-4 that is reasonably priced, you may coincider that if the Lasik doesn't help.

DMBI have a pair of EOTech Holo sights and both are 1x. They are just perfect, and I'm 73 with worn out eyes.
Before I had the lenses replaced in each eye, the EOTech's were fine, and even better now that I don't have to look through corroded eye lenses.

MolonLabe4162x should not be a significant distraction even at 5 yards, certainly not at ~50.
Dot size makes a difference at distance. I prefer the 2.5 moa, but have used the 4 with success on the 1x AimPoint.
Trijicon makes a 1x called the TriPower which has an inverted chevron reticle that is nice. They also make a 1.4x4 with the inverted chevron. Both use tritium for illumination.
I have the 1.4x4 on my M4 and it's good from contact distance to ~300 yards.
