sightron binos
I looked at a pair of S3 10-40 Sightrons, they seemed nice. I haven't heard much about them. Anybody have experience or opinions with them? I want a new pair of decent binos, have been thinking Minox. Budget needs ro stay under 5-600. Thanks

I have a pair of S3 8x42's and they are very good binoculars. I have had zip problems with them . Construction wise they are not a Leica(no one else is either) but I use them early light and at last light and they are very bright and have great resolution.

I think you will find that the Eagle Optics Ranger Platinum Class or the Celestron Regal LX are every bit as good as the Sightron SIII (10x42mm not 10x40) and have a better warranty. You can look at the Eagle Optics at your nearest Wild Birds Unlimited http://wbu.know-where.com/wbu/

Within your budget the best choice might be the Pentax DCF SP. The 10x43mm can be purchased online for about $440. The 10x50mm ($500) would be better for low light conditions if you absolutely need a 10x.

Based on what is their warranty better? You can get the Sightrons for a good deal less then either as well.

Sightron Lifetime Replacement Warranty - Fully transferable replacement warranty. Sightron will replace any product found to be defective due to workmanship or materials with a brand new product.

Eagle Optics Platinum Protection Warranty - If any Eagle Optics Ranger Platinum Class binocular is found to have defects in workmanship or materials, Eagle Optics will repair or replace it. No warranty card is necessary. No time limit applies. The guarantee is transferable, it applies whether you are the original purchaser or not.

If a Ranger Platinum Class binocular requires service or repair not covered by the lifetime guarantee, Eagle Optics will repair or replace it (even if it was your fault) for just $20, plus return shipping and handling.

Celestron No-Fault Limited Lifetime Warranty -
A. Celestron warrants Regal LX binoculars to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for its usable lifetime. Celestron will repair or replace it or part thereof which, upon inspection by Celestron, is found to be defective in materials or workmanship. As a condition to the obligation of Celestron to repair or replace such product, the product must be returned to Celestron prepaid together with proof-of-purchase satisfactory to Celestron.

B. The NO FAULT provision of this warranty means that regardless of how the binocular may have been damaged or rendered unusable (fully or partially) by the owner of the binocular, Celestron will repair or replace the binocular for $25 without any questions being asked.

Prices
Sightron SIII 8x42mm - $327
Eagle Optics Ranger Platinum Class 8x42mm - $380
Celestron Regal LX 8x42mm - $360

So when you drop your binoculars down the mountainside, you'll have to buy a new pair of Sightrons for $327 or spend about $25 to get new Eagle Optics or Celestrons. I think that's worth about $50.

There is no doubt if he has $500 to spend the Pentax DCF SP is heads above any of the Sightrons, Eagle Optics or Celestrons.

Until I look thru a pair I'll take your word for it. All I know is I have a pair of Leica 8x42's which are top glasses but 1/2 lb heavier then my 8x42 sightron and I don't give up much using the Sightron.
