Is the Alpen 786 20-6x80 a good value
How good are the optics and are they rugged enough for daily use ?

Depends on your needs. I had one for a while. They are very good at their price point. For a range spotter, they will do a good job on .223 bullet holes to 300 yards. This is in good light at 50-60X.

In dimmer light, like dusk, you will be limited to 40-45X at the top in my experience.

They are pretty sharp at the center 70-80% of the FOV, the edges are pretty sketchy. Still a usable picture for many situations.

Don't expect to get something it isn't. It isn't a budget Zeiss. It is a good low price spotter and will work well in most situations. Extreme dawn and dusk being where you will see the limitations along with getting super sharp detail at above 45X even in great light.
