scope for claw mounts??

I have 9.3x62 mauser sporter that has the claw mount bases, but not the rings.

Found a gunsmith who will fit a set of rings to my bases, I just need to send him the rifle and scope. The hitch is that scope needs to be a straight tube (no bell).

Most new straight tube scopes are 1-4x. Don't you think I need a little more magnification for a 9.3x62? I planned on using the rifle for hog hunting, and the scope needs to be good for low light conditions.

Meopta and Leopold make a 1.5-5x in a straight tube. The Z6 would be nice, but it is too new. Anybody have other suggestions? The help is appreciated.

I'm a bit biased having hunted with a fixed 4X scope for the past 20 years and think 4x or 5x is fine, especially for a 9.3x62.

I had some claw rings made for two drillings and feel that, for a lovely rifle like you've got, a "period" scope is the way to go if you can find one. It took me a few years, but eventually found a used Pecar fixed 6X rail scope and a fixed 2.5X straight tube Kahels. New scopes are far better optically and will cost a lot less in the long run.

I hade a 1.5-5x leupold on my .35 Whelen that I use for pigs. I had a bad expireance with it in the dark and went to a fixed 6x Leupold with the 42mm reticle. It works great for dark colored pigs in the dark but it limits the use for close quick shots in the daytime. I have a 8x57 double for that.
If you get a straight tube scope with a #1 or #4 reticle it might work for you at night and for sure everything else but a good Europiean gunsmith can fit claw rings for any size objective to your bases and there are a few of them here in the U.S.. if the the front base sits on the reciver ring you may have to use a straight tube scope anyway or nothing larger than 32mm

Thanks for the feedback. The claw mount is on the action bridge and a European gunsmith told me only a straight tube is likely to work.

I debated going with a period scope, but I actually want to use the gun, so I am looking for a modern variable power as no one makes a straight tube 4x power scope.

Zeiss used to make a very long straight tubed 1.25x4 scope with a 1" tube that would be perfect. You can find them from time to time on ebay. They usually sell for $600to$700 depending on condition.
