Tell me about Vortex scopes

StonecreekTell me about Vortex scopes
I recently came by a Vortex 4-12X on a rifle I bought. I'm totally unfamiliar with these and would appreciate some insight into their general qualities. And if I chose to sell it, what should I ask?

Matt NormanThey make several levels of scopes so the price is going to depend on which one you have. I have a couple of their scopes; Crossfires (entry level) and Diamondback (mid-level). Both have been fine and served me well mostly for the sunny days I use them on small calibers. Vortex is becoming a major player in the scope world with their price lines. The one time I sent one back for repair (my fault) they promptly replaced it at no charge.

sambarman338The only thing I know about them is that the makers know about galling and other dangers to the erector system in image-movement scopes, and of their patenting hardened-steel bearings between the erector tube and turret screws.
Whether they use this system in many models, I don't know, but it was used in some big variable c. 5-25x.

JGRaiderVortex has a great warranty, and you'll likely need to use it on everything except the Razor line of scopes.

BiebsAll made in China now, are they not?

JGRaiderRazor is Jap I think. The only original idea Vortex has had in it's lifetime is they'll give you a new optic no matter what happens to it. I'd prefer to buy an optic that doesn't screw up in the first place.

Bobby TomekI've had several Vortex scopes, including Diamondback, Diamondback HP and Viper. I've had no issues with them, and the quality at their respective price points is quite good.
I never intended to buy a Vortex, but one was a package deal with a used Contender barrel I bought. It was a 4-12x40 AO Diamondback and proved to be repeatable and consistent in the adjustments and was very comparable to the optical characteristics of the Leupolod VX-II line available at that time.
After that, I did pick up three more and have no complaints as to their performance. Send me a few pictures and detai9ls of the model you have, and I will try and help you gauge a value on it.

StonecreekIt's a Diamondback 4-12x40. Looks like MSRP is $269. It shows no use, and since it is surplus with me if anyone wants to make an offer simply shoot me a PM.

Big Wonderful WyomingKind of like the movie Tommy Boy.
Guaranteed piece of crap in a box, unless you buy a Razor.
The PST is probably the biggest hunk of junk for $1000 MSRP that you can buy. But they will send you a new one if it does turn out that way.
By my way of thinking a $1000 scope should never have to get sent back.

MyNameIsEarlI have had a few eye surgeries for my eyes so scar tissue refracts light away from iris. So a good scope is a must for me. Vortex are to dark and light transmission sucks. I have found Nikon to be superior for the same price of a Vortex.

I wish that were true, but it definitely is not. I've sent back two alpha scopes for things that should have been caught before ever leaving the factory. But as long as humans make scopes, mistakes are going to happen -- and it doesn't matter if it's a $29 blister pack special or a $3k alpha.
I never encountered any issues with the Vortex scopes I once had, so in my usage, that makes them have a better performance record than both S&B and Zeiss. LOL

JGRaiderIf you've never had trouble with a Vortex scope, count your blessings. This thread from another board titled "Hall of Shame Gear" has Vortex frequently listed, unfortunately.

Probably some of the best advice you will get. Unfortunately, it has taken me over 40 years to get that through my thick skull

JGRaiderYou and me both Jason!

SliderTheir lower priced scopes have lower quality optics. Like most manufactures.
