Zeiss Terra 3X...
Anybody have one of these on a Big Game rifle?

NPD345 and I drove over to Boise for lunch, and to visit Cabela's.

They had the 2-7x42 scopes for $399, choice of all three reticles.

I struggle a little with the idea of having to ship the scope back to Deutschland for service VS 400 miles west of here to Leupold.

Any thoughts...?

I just got back from the new Cabela's in DE. Went there to pick a new string for my crossbow and stopped by the scope dept. to check out this very scope. Thinking of replacing my Leupold VXII 2x7 which just returned from the Leupold repair shop. Damn thing wouldn't track accurately and I've lost faith in that scope. I've sent it back twice for the same issue. They said the entire erector system was replaced so I hope it now works.

Just my luck, Cabel's was out of the 2x7 Terra. They did have other Terra scopes and the one thing that I noticed about all of them was the rather large, or should I say huge, ocular lenses. I assume the 2x7x32 is the same. Compared to a Leupold they are really fat on the rear end of the scope. I can easily see where it might require higher mounts to eliminate problems with the bolt handle. Really turned me off. I don't like big scopes, but that's just me.

If one should need service on a Zeiss scope do you actually send it to Germany or is there a US service center? If shipping to Germany is required that would certainly be another negative factor. BTW - check out www.cameralandny.com. They have some demos for $274.99.

2-7x42mm.

That was kept me from walking out the door with one, that warranty issue.

Looks like you send your scope to a service center in VA if you have issues. I don't know if they fix them there or ship them to Germany for repair.

Rich- There is no need to ever send one abroad for repair. They have a service center in the US and have for a long time, so there is no warranty issue as you mention. And as far as I know, there is no 2-7x42, either. But you can get a 2-7x32 from Doug at cameralandny.com for well under 300 shipped as an open-box special -- or a new/sealed one for 349.

I sent an old pair of Zeiss 8x30 IF binoculars to Virginia and as quickly as they came back prepaid with no service cost the work had to be done in the US.

Rich-One more thing: in that same price range you mention, don't overlook Meopta. Cameraland made a special deal with them and is offering the 3.5-10x44 MeoPro (normally a $600+ scope) for 399 brand new/shipped and with the #4 reticle. The Meopta quality is exceptional.

The reticle in this model has wider spacing between the heavy portions of the horizontal wires than the typical #4 and is more like a Zeiss #8. For deer hunters, it is hard to beat. I actually prefer Meopta's standard #4 in their other models because targets here are primarily very dark (hogs) and out only during the lowest lighting conditions.

But that 399 deal is something that you simply can't beat. I really like the Meopta quality
