Namibian kudu 2007

I had a few enquiries recently regarding kudu specifically in Namibia, and I saw Ann posted a few from the place she is representing, so I thought, why not post a few pics of the 2007 season's kudu hunted with Ndumo Safaris? To make it more interesting, which one do you fancy the most, and why? As you know, kudu has been hard hit by rabies in most of the central region of Namibia, so it might come as good news that a lot of these kudu where shot in the Khomas Hochland.

To answer about my favorite, I'd have to go along with some spread of the horns. Also, I like the white tips that are distinguishable. Seem to add a contrast.

Lots of great kudu there, Karl. Indeed, Namibia is blessed with nice bulls. If I ever get to pose with another one I particularly like this pose you have:

It shows a couple of things, first that a kudu can always see the tip of his horns, just follow his eye. And you can push a broom stick through the spiral, it is that straight!

Thanks for posting Karl, we all enjoy looking at trophy picts.

But don't be surprised if somebody RIPs into you reg the proximity of a few of the hunters to their kudu.

Well mike, this bull have an interesting story. Thse hunters (from Mexico), did not want to shoot kudu. when we saw this bull creeping over the hill, I asked them if they are inetersted in it. They declined. I asked them if they mind if I go and take a look at it myself, to which the hunter that shot it replied: How big is it? I said huge, so we stalked it and bagged it. It went close to 56 inches, but above that, it was a very nice bull.

Very timely Karl since you were one of the handful of outfitters I sent my inquiry email too last week about my first safari!

57", taken by my friend in a resort at two hours from Windhoek going west.

Very good, but I prefer whenthe tips go toqward external the trophy than internal.

Hey Karl,

Those Kudu in Namibia are very impressive!

I like the story of those hunters from Mexico...It certainly drew in the shooter's consideration really fast!

When you pass up on a trophy your PH suggests or asks if interested and yet your PH still wants to go and stalk it to gain a further look at it, I would be like the shooter and say, Let me at it, my man!!!!

I have a quick question kudu. If the horns do not come around completely for the last curl and kind of splay out, does that mean that it's not a mature animal? I shot one in Botswana at the end of a great stalk on the last day of the safari that measure just above 50 inches, but it does not have than beautiful full curl at the top. Just gives me another reason to go back, right?

Carolina Counsel, yes, if the horns does not turn up and or out at the end, the animals is not mature. Sort of shooting a soft bosses buffalo. You will notice that although not all the bulls I have posted is necicarrily over 52 inches, they are all mature bulls. It sure does give you a reason to come back!

LJS, if I remember correctly, it was about 58 inches.

crane, he was just on 50 inches. The hunter wanted one of 50 and bigger, we found this old boy with about 25 other (mostly cows), even after I told him that it will probaly not make 50, he still took it as it was such a beautiful bull. His daugter then took a bigger one of about 53 inches.

what would you say the average, minimum and maximum distances your clients shot their Kudu?

L. Dihel, the average distance was about 135 yards, closest about half that and the longest about 300 yards.
Die Ou Jagter, yes, she was a lovely girl, outshot her dad on trophy size and on accuracy the whole trip, except on her first warthog.

That is an excellent collection of trophies for sure!

One question, is is a local 'type' that has the tip of one horn pointing slightly inwards?

It is something I haven't seen before.

Also, can you tell us at what age a kudu bull is really mature and breeding?

Hi Gabriel!

I see you are in London now!?

Kudu reach maturity at about 3 years, and start breeding between 3,4-4 years, depending on the area (and if he gets a chance!)

Trophy quality ussualy from year 5-6, although the good old boys are 8 years and older.

The tip of one horn is not restricted to that area, as we have shot a few over here (2000km's away) that had the same feature. One was a 58" moster I shot late last year....(see hunting reports)

Maybe I missed what you posted about this one all ready.

This is still my favorite in spite of the impressive measures some of the others apparently have. How big in fact was he? This is just a great looking bull to me. I'd certainly would have pulled the trigger with no hesitation.
