I'm very interested in taking a Sable and Roan on my next trip to Namibia 2010...plans are presently being made and for those of you that know me...my son Josh will be going for the Sable and a Blue Wildebeest and I will be going for a Roan and Black Wildebeest...We will be hunting them with the INFAMOUS 9.3 x 62mm in a SEMI-CUSTOM CZ 550 American that I will be having my new gunsmith Africanize...It should be fun...

This isn't the greatest pic, but it was taken in the Caprivi a few months ago. Mahongo game park.

These are both awesome animals and excellent trophies, but if hunted in Namibia these days, chances are that they will be on a fenced ranch and have a very high trophy fee attached (although I know of one concession in "Bushmanland" that has 1-2 roan on quota per year, these are tuff hunts). If so, why not consider going someplace more wild, say Mozambique or Zimbabwe, where you could hunt the sable and perhaps an nyala instead of the roan?

I shot a roan in the Caprivi Strip/Park some years ago when it was still open to hunting, and it was a brutal tracking hunt and therefore very rewarding. But they are not that wonderful of a trophy where I would feel the same had it come from a ranch.

I do understand your sentiments...I fully agree but I have a FANTASTIC opportunity that I am more than satisfied with for several reasons...which includes property size, price, and World-Class Trophy animals...the PH and the guide we will be hunting with, their accomodations, and service...After evaluating the scenario...it was a no-brainer personally for me...

BOTH these Sable were taken on my brothers private owner/operated (Dendro Park Ranch) in Zambia last season.

Although we are prodominantly a cape buffalo hunting opertion we do have some reasonable herds of Roan and Sable on the property as well and allow a few to be taken off each year.

We are fully booked out for the 2008 season and unsure at this point in time how many hunts we will offer in 2009 as the ranch is scheduled to be incorporated into a magnificient Southern/East African Wildlife Developement Project called ...........

[THE Born Free Destinations Club] which will offer (24 x equity shares) to individual VIP entreprenuers and or Companies with an interest to purchase (equity/fractional shares) in this Wildife Collection Project Portfolio.

We are still at the (expression of interest) pre-launch stage and I will know more about the project launch date and possible 2009 bookings after our 2008 season has been completed at the end of September

My PH, Yann Le Bouvier with the western roan I shot in Benin this January.... which by the way, was taken with a custom 9.3x62 built on a Brno VZ-24 action. It performed flawlessly as long as I did my job!

This 26+" roan was taken in Tanz in 2005 with a 9.3x62.



This 38" sable was taken on the same trip with the same rifle.

Although I love kudu, I think sable are the most attractive and awe-inspiring "little" animal in Africa, maybe the world. I can't think of a more striking animal!

That sable came from Nagamo Sikumi on the Hwange border in Zim last year. I did quite a bit of research on where it might be likely that I could find a bigger sable than the 42.5" I had and the hunt be in a non-fenced area. I guess my research paid off. I shot the sable on day one of an amazing 21 day safari put on by Mokore Safaris.

I started this thread as you know because I was all PSYCHED about returning to the DARK CONTINENT with intentions of me and my son hunting these most beautiful animals...

My plans have changed RADICALLY and suffice to say I will have to reschedule for maybe in four years...Shoots...that is a long time from now...

For now I MUST only DREAM...

However the GOOD NEWS...

I will be doing a Bull Elk/Muley Combo instead!!!

And I will start a thread asking for your referrals!!!...Its gotta be a SPECIAL one!!!

Go to the hunting pages. I have a hunt from cameroon in 2004 listed there. It has a picture of the western Roan I took. Both horns were over 30 inches.

I'm away from home right now and do not have access to my computer where the pic is saved or I would post it. But, it was a hell of an animal.

I took both of these guys with a handgun on the same day at Rooiport in April 2006. If memory serves, The Sable was SCI #4 and the Roan SCI #2 when I harvested them. I haven't checked to see if they've moved down the list since then.

It seems to me that you had an EXTRAORDINARY hunt!!!

Congrats on a couple real BEAUTIES!!!

I'll likely never do better than I did on that hunt -- 22 world class animals in 15 days of hunting.

Of course, it didn't hurt to have a world class PH finding the beasts and telling me which ones to harvest.

Sable on the Wall

My wife had planned to hunt a roan and I wanted to shoot a Sable,along with other animals, for our up comming safari August 22 through September 11,2008. We finally got the cost about a month ago. Roan $10,500: Sable $10,000. South Afica, East Cape. Too high for my pocket book. Disappointed but will identify other animals. This will be our third safari to SA.
