My wife’s grandpa is 83 years old and in the nursing home unable to stand and dress himself. Up until 3 months ago when my Wife obtained Gurdiajship he was getting Viagra prescription.

Desire does not equate ability.

Although Gramps may be popping Viagra, dripping strong-smelling urine, and pestering females,
he lacks the swollen cheek glands oozing pheromones.
There are species differences between elephants and humans.

Seriously, this study may not be a nail in the coffin of sport hunting of elephants.

The need for government culling operations taking out multiple elephant family units in one pop can be eliminated in the areas where elephant over-populations occur:
Increase quota and decrease fees for sport hunting of the old bulls there.

Decrease quota and increase fees for big old elephant bulls in areas where they are NOT destroying the local ecology.

Surely something like this is going on now,
but might need finer tuning. Elephant populations are on the increase, according to the linked article.
This is despite the continuing black market for poached ivory, which they also say is being "phased out" on schedule! animal

Further fine tuning: Open season on poachers, like for many other varmints. No bag limit. Pay a bounty for poacher canine teeth or ears.

Elderly? Oh I forgot, their just like people.

Mature bulls are the breeders. This is not new info. Yes bulls can mate at 15 but often don’t, why? Too many studs in the barn that’s why. And the other studs are bigger and meaner. Remove all bulls over the age 30, guess who will be ready to step up to the plate? The guy who’s been riding the bench. I have lost a lot of faith in science these days. Seems everyone has an agenda. I remember being 15, put me in coach, I’m ready to play.

My point is simply this, animals will breed if can, because a bull elephant goes through musk or is capable of going through musk does not mean he is breeding, or if he does breed his offspring are the best. He still has to compete to breed and will loose the race to prime bulls.

My other point the study is not a study. It is an opinion piece. There is not study of the cows this bull maybe breeding, calf live weight births and survival compared to younger bull, or how many cows he is breeding.

That is the info I need to change my mind.

A 50 year bull can breed, physically, but will not at least not in quantity on competition with 30 year olds that was my point. Being able to physically does not equate actual breeding or that such a bull breeding is the best scenario as younger healthier bulls produce stronger, better calves.

Shooting old bulls and not shooting prime breeding age bulls and younger would produce better calves if this allows prime age bulls more room to breed. Of course nature more or less with competition and death, hunting and disease, wounds from breeding fights, generally ensure this.
