The one thing I shy away from is the synthetic, like the stuff made especially for fishing for Africa, because the very hot irons they yse to iron your cloths in camp will totally destroy them, and they are noisey anyway.

Lots of good leads. Thanks.

To comment on why I need "special pants" to hunt Africa:
I live in the Pacific NW. My hunts are nearly always in 20 to 40 degrees with wind, rain, snow etc. None of that sissy Texas style hunting for me! (kidding of course-it must be really nice to hunt in 70 degree weather from time to time!). As such, My “goto” pants are waterproof and insulated with a thin layer of thinsulate.

Since I need to pick up something suitable for hunting in 100 degree weather, why not see what others are using and have found successful? I know that while backpacking in the summer, I have really enjoyed the zip off leg pants, but the stuff I have now is too noisy.

I don’t see myself hunting in jeans. I don’t find them comfortable as other options. Also, I just attended a hunters Ed instructor annual training event here locally, and one of the instructors was doing a presentation on an eyesight program here in the state for hunters. He (he is an optometrist) said that based on the way deer and elk’s eyes pick up light, faded blue jeans are to deer what blaze orange is to us. Not sure if that is 100% valid, but since I don’t care for jeans anyway it just re-enforced my opinion.

Again, thanks for all the leads, very helpful!

Steve, based what happened last time I wore my loincloth around you, I don’t foresee doing that again… I still have trouble talking about it despite all the counseling. No means no dude!

re: 5.11 rear pants pockets.

When I first wore 5.11 pants I thought the rear pockets were crap...

After I wore them for a while I found I really liked them, and found them comfortable when walking and when sitting. And I always carry a lot of stuff in my pockets.

They are my favorite pants and shorts.
I am wearing a pair of them now...

Let me add that the 5.11s are purpose-built for outdoor activities, having been designed for mountain climbers. Now they are extremely popular with contract security forces, paramilitary, FBI, etc.

It is not just the pockets. Those loose pants legs may not be most desirable on a horse, but they are comfortable for extreme mobility like climbing or martial arts, are less fatiguing and have inside pockets for neoprene knee protectors for crawling (though most don't mention that feature.) I have several pairs.

That said, the fabric is a bit light for me for African hunting. My personal favorite these days is Wrangler relaxed fit denims. The loose fit is far better for me than Levis, which I favored for years. Nice and heavy to ward of those nasty skeeters and tsetse flies. Some of my buddies took those to Zambia, where I wore Eddie Bauer khaki shorts. Sixty-five plus tsetse bites per leg cured me of that idea. homer

Another vote for 5:11 tactical, shirts, pants, shorts.

I have been looking at the 5:11 pants. It looks like the tactical pants come in a 100% cotton model, and a few polyester/cotton blend models.

I am leaning towards the 100% cotton, but I like the idea of the blend.

For those who have picked up the blend, how quiet are they?

Also, I looked at the TAG line of clothing and it looks like that is EXACTLY what I have been looking for!

Who cares about the pants. What about something really important like the color of stripes on your socks?

I like red myself!

Pants:

I have to give credit to my hunning partner Shinbone for this one, but it was a great tip. ARBORWEAR!

We found the articulation at the knee on the 5.11 and family of pants weren't enough. I believe these pants were designed for guys climbing trees to prune them etc.....

Although they sounded like climbing pants, I find them to wear like tac pants but are more comfortable in general movement. They have all the pockets and even come in an all nylon (or poly of sorts) that feels like cotton to me. So they double-duty for mountain / sheep hunting.

He bought 'em direct on line. Even have the green I think you guys are looking for on safari.

Take care,

Buff

I prefer the thicker 5.11 Cotton to the TAG Cotton. I have pants and shirts in both.

RE zip off legs. I have a pair of Zip off leg pants. In theory they are great. However I found if I wore them when doing a lot of long distance walking, ie hunting, the zippers chaffed my legs, badly. They are great for fishing or use around camp, but I do not like them for hunting where I will be walking.

I used to wear Levies jeans every day. They were my favorite pants for casual wear, for several seveal years...

Until I wore 5.11's.

IF I was elected President [I can prove I was born in the USA], or IF I became KING of the WORLD, I would wear 5.11 Pants and Shirts everyday, EVERYWHERE.

If anybody did not like it I would have them Terminated with Extreme Prejudice... flame

I am wearing a pair of ragged 5.11 shorts right now.

When I hunt in your part of the World, or else were in similar weather conditions, I wear Wool pants and shirts.

I NEVER wear ANY cotton in those conditions.

I wear a lot of wool even when hunting in Texas durring cold weather.

However for wet conditions from say 45 degrees to 70 degrees 5.11 makes the identical pants and shirts in Nylon.

Much below 50 degrees, if you are wearing cotton and it gets wet,and you are stuck out in the elements, you might die, especially of temps get down around 40 degrees.

The Nylon 5.11's do not absorb water like cotton and they dry much, much faster.

Thanks folks.

I picked up the TAG field pants. Pretty much exactly what I was looking for. My only concern will be how tough are they in brush. They look great though. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Rob,

I'm so glad I won't have to have Terry set aside some trackers overalls for you. Showing up for a buffalo hunt without pants could bring up untold issues.

I had durability issues with a few of the different kind of Cabelas pants I have bought. Setteled on the ones REI sales. Quiet and very durable. But they are kind of pricey at about 60 bucks.

I bought three sets of convertibles at SCI four years ago from Gander Mtn. The pants zip just above the knee, and the shirts unzip to sleeveless. They will make their third trip in 25 days...

The great F.C. Selous often hunted wearing just a shirt, hat and shoes ... no pants at all! The white shorts below were airbrushed in.
