470EDDYFYI-FACING DOWN FEAR- New John Sharp Book Coming Soon
Heads Up fans- I just received an email update from John Sharp that his new book- FACING DOWN FEAR- projected to be released in March is a bit delayed by the publishers....HUMMM, Normal??...COMING SOON...
He is publishing a Deluxe Edition that is signed and numbered and slip cased, as well as a trade edition in paperback. THIS IS not A NOVEL, but the life and times of his PH career.
Needless to say, John is a great friend, my Go To PH and a Legendary icon in Africa. Many might not have heard that he has been selected to be RIGBY's Man in Africa as well!!
His publisher will offer shipments from Africa, Europe and the US so postage shouldn't be an issue....PAY PAL or VISA.
You may keep up to date on the release of his book on John's website-
www.john-sharp-safaris.comI am already committed for one of the first Deluxe editions!!
In the mean time if you need a book to read, one of my favorites is Wilbur Smith's A TIME to DIE. This is a riveting book about wartime in Zimbabwe...be sure that John is the lead character in the book...you won't be disappointed. Wilbur and John are great friends and Wilbur has shared many a campfire with John....
Cheers,

I was fortunate enough to have been given an advance copy as a read ahead. It was a most enjoyable, easy to read story, about the life and times of one of the industries most iconic PHs. I highly recommend it!

BaxterBJohn Sharp is probably the first contemporary PH name I ever heard. When I went to SCI the first time a few years ago, there were two people I wanted to meet: John Sharp and Luke Samaras. Glad to say I met both. Look forward to the book...
I received an advanced copy for review purposes. It contains great stories, and John is a very good writer, with a sense of humour, so I was VERY impressed.
I look forward to seeing the print copies, because the photos are also outstanding.
I have been in touch with the U.S. distributor and will be picking up, at current count, 20 books for myself and friends. I live only 25 miles or so from the warehouse.
I have already warned John that he is going to have to do a second printing!
If you want a copy from the first printing, don't go to sleep on this one!

Help a brother out...who’s the publisher?

470EDDYWELL....let me see if the fellow still has the one I looked at...the wood was NOT spectacular...AND the reason I didn't buy it was he had about 2-300 rounds of HEAVY handloads I didn't want...and he wouldn't budge on price...which was about $7K several years ago...
They built a number of 404 Jeffery rifles which is really a lot more reasonable in a Model 70...that is also an excellent cartridge. I recall that Roger even did a Museum Raffle rifle in 404...which are Spectacular rifles!!
Cheers,

Per John, the Publisher is:
Ex Montibus Media - Hannes Wessels
http://exmontibusmedia.co.za/EMM/hannes-wessels/Hannes Wessels
A 14th generation white African Hannes Wessels was born in 1956 in what was then Salisbury in Southern Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe) but grew up in Umtali (now Mutare) on the Mozambique border. As a young boy he met Robert Ruark on safari in Mozambique and was later captivated by his books. He has never forgotten Ruark’s passion for Africa, its people and its wild places.
After leaving school he was a combat soldier in the bush- war waged against the forces of Robert Mugabe’s Patriotic Front before acquiring a law degree but practised only fleetingly. Turning to a career in wildlife he operated professionally in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania in a twenty year career. In 1994 he was severely gored by a wounded buffalo in Maasailand which almost cost him his life.
He has published ‘Strange Tales from Africa’ in America which is a collection of stories about people and places encountered by him in the course of his hunting days. His biography of PK van der Byl (former Rhodesian Defense Minister) includes a revised history of the Rhodesian imbroglio and he has completed a book about the life and times of Colonel Ron Reid-Daly of Selous Scout fame.
He is married to Mandy and has two daughters; Hope 15 and Jana 12 and lives in Darling in the Cape Province of South Africa. He retains business interests in tourism and remains keenly interested in all matters relating to African wildlife and conservation.

I met Hannes when he hunted for Luke Samaras and we shared the same camp in the concession in which he was gored by a Buffalo wounded the evening before.
This unfortunate incident which indeed nearly cost him his life was very likely the reason which steered him away from the PH industry for good.
