fla3006Butch Searcy has Vectors, or did awhile back. I have a Brevex barreled action in 510Wells I'll sell, but I want $2600, the price I paid.

If you are fanatic about the mauser obendorf stamp/engarving, get a rifle from factory, it will maintain the hard earned $$$$ better

The left handed action is primary need. I am going to have two 404 Jefferies built. One for my friend David he is left handed. Suggestions appreciated.

fla3006If I'm not mistaken, the Sig/Oberndorf copy is made by Johannsen, nearly identical to the Vektor. Granite Mountain in the USA also makes one that is almost identical to the Vektor. IMO, these new actions are superior to the original Oberndorfs in styling, quality, worksmanship, design, etc., having owned both.

The travel of the bolt backwards in ejecting the fired case is so long that in moments of extreme tension one is inclined to cut it off before the empty shell has been ejected and to begin the forward thrust of reloading too soon, so that the fired case becomes reinserted into the barrel instead of a fresh cartridge from the magazine. Into this category fall the 350, 375, 425 and the 416." (and 404, 505, and newer derivatives)

You don't need a magnum length action to build a .404 Jeff, although you can sure do it. That is one of the great virtues of the cartridge, IMHO. Now if you just want one, I understand that too.

The left-hand requirement makes it difficult if you stick with Magnum Mauser, but you could do it with Dakota. If you look at the ads from the European custom makers in Hatari Times, you will find what you want.
This same situation is how I got involved in building rifles for the PH trade -- two left-handed PHs in Zim asked me to "organize" proper rifles for them.

AtkinsonA 404 is a waste of a Magnum action, I'd use a good 1909 argentine or Banner Mauser myself, in fact that is what I am doing....A pre 64 M-70 in 375 with a Blackburn drop box makes up into a neat 404.
The Vectors are Magnum actions and Butch has left handed victors at a reasonable price.

The above statement by Bell, is what I have been preaching for years, as an argument in favor of a double rifle on dangerous game when useing large bores! The draw back stated above is compounded by the use of a push feed, for this use.
All that has nothing to do with what a person wants! If a Brevex (at $3000 for the right hand, and $4500 for aleft hand, "IF" you can find one),is what you want, then by all means secure one, but Ray is right, a good 98 is all that is needed for the 404! I would spen the bulk of the money on a very good barrel, and wood! A left hand action would surely have to be a new Knock-off, but that is no problem, at under $1500.
I have an idea, Rusty, sell me your 450/400 3" double for $1500, and you will only have to dig up another 4, or 5K to get the other action!

The price is right, the wait too long for me I think.

Check out the link below. I have heard, but don't know for a fact, that Gottfried Prechtl is building these actions for both Mauser and Johannsen.
If you take the time to click on every link, there are several interesting things available, such as the "GOL Integral barrels - front sight base, sling ring eyelet and quarter splint - MILLED FROM ONE SOLID PIECE" as well as a host of desirable parts and gunsmith equipment.
Also, note at the bottom on the page on Magnum actions the availibility of Rigby I, II, and III magazine covers. I interpret this to mean drop box magazines of various capacities.
It doesn't address the availibility of left handed actions per se, but IF he indeed supplies these actions to Johannsen, then Richard's post would indicate that possibility.
I am sending Gottfried an e-mail to inquire about the possibility and will post his response.

I have been shooting the 375, 416 and 404 for years along with a 7x57, 8x57, 9.3x62, and variuos std. lenght actions and a few Sakos in 222, 6x45 etc....I have yet to short stroke a magnum action!!
But I still love a double, but you know that!

If a Magnum action isn't required, have you lookewd at the Legacy Sports importaion of the Mauser X action? Price is about $550 in blue and about $200 more for the stainless. Comes with the Model 70 style safety and a few other add ons. I believe the web site is
www.legacysports.com I know this action will chamber up to a 416 rem. Mag. I am not surehow that compares to the .404 in case dimensions etc.

Granite Mountain is a no show. Phone and fax busy like no such number, no such zone!
As I said above, Legacy has only right handed actions.
Dakotas out of my price range.
The Johannsen stuff looked great not sure of the pricing. From what I figured it is out of my price range.
Only bright spot of the day was Empire Arms. They carry the M98 type action. 3 position Winchester type safety. Just waiting to hear back on the pricing. The fellow I talked with was very pleasant.
Still waiting on SigArms to get back to me.

My understanding is the this has already passed in the House, and President Bush is favorably disposed to signing it. It's just a matter of it getting to the floor of the Senate.

No I haven't, but that's not George's fault. He has been out of town.
To tell you the truth, I found out that the Montana Long Action will work for the 404 project and this afternoon I spoke with Scot at MRC and bought a left and right hand action from him. The price is too good to pass up.
The right hand action ships to John Ricks this week and the Left hand action will be ready mid Nov.
George at Empire was most kind and I am sure I would have enjoyed his actions, but the price of MRC snagged me.
I appreciate your input Jack as well as the others above. I am getting excited about the 404s being made, again.

CustomstoxLegacy imports a 98 clone that is manufactureed in Italy by Global and not the Mark X. It does have a double square bridge but the dovel tails were cut for scope rings that have never been built, although easy to modify to Talleys. I just chambered one in a 9.3X62 in a half round half octagon Pac Nor barrel.
