Yeah, it is a re-post, but to answer your question about how close, my answer would be:

"That is shit-your-pants close!"

Hard to believe those guys are laughing.

If not for some damn good last second shooting.... that hunter was in for a first class ass whooping!!

Notice all where using bolt actions.....no second shots. I'd want a DR!!

In the actual film if I remember there were a couple of shots as simba came on and either missed or were uneffective... The guy with the killing shot knelt down and was on the cat's plane of vision and came for him... Being on the same plane he waited to the last and hit the cat in the brain... The rifle was I believe a 416 Dakota left handed model and he was a right handed shooter... Lucky he did not need
more then one shot... Eeker

Retreever. wave It was great meeting you and your wife in Reno. You really have me hooked.....maybe at next year's show I'll have something to boast about but never the equal of your elephant hunt. beer

Big deal. The lion is only running on three legs! Smiler

You can also see the bullet hit the lion below its left eye. Close, eh?

Agree.

Do you know where that happened?

Looks like the cat was bringing his a-game. I suppose the shooter was glad he brought his a-game too.

What does it mean "a-game"?

"A-game" is borrowed from sports like American Football and Basketball. It means your absolute best play.

This incident took place in Botswana after a women wounded the lion with the first shot. The PH called for backup before the following up the cat, smart move in my opinion.

The PH who almost got whacked is Ronnie Rowland(sp?), I believe.

I filmed an elephant hunt in Botswana in 2007 and he was our PH for two days until the scheduled PH could arrive after some mechanical difficulties with his vehicle. Ronnie told us about this hunt and to say it was hair raising is an understatement. There were 4 PH's involved in the followup. Ronnie actually fired twice, with the first shot missing. The head shot that stopped the charge was his.

I really liked Ronnie and though our scheduled PH was more than adequate, after spending a couple of days with Ronnie I know I would jump at the chance to work with him again.

I thought the PH was Ronnie (SP?) Crous? I have the episode on the DVR at home and it has been discussed here before. Let me look it up...

Okay, I'm back. Read this thread for more info.

I stand corrected. I was really struggling to come up with his last name. Garth is the PH we had to wait a bit for on the afore mentioned safari. Great guy and hard working PH as well.

I understand the shooter switched to a double rifle shortly after this close, close call.
