Is it true that 0.30 caliber 180 gr bx or fail safe has enough penetration to down an elephant with brain shot. i've heard and even read somewhere. isn't that exagerated or it is true?

ps. i don't suggest humting jumbo with this caliber ,but am curiuse to know-

I am 100% certain they WILL penetrate an elephant skull completely if fired in our 30/404.

In fact, if hunting elephant was legal with a 30 caliber, I would be more than happy to put that to the test.

How do folks feel generally about the use of Barnes X or Barnes Triple Shock bullets on dangerous, thick skinned game like buffalo, are those bullets a good choice? Saeed, with as many buffalo as you have shot surely you have experience with Barnes bullets.

I have only used the original Barnes X, and they have performed exceedingly well for all of us on several hunts.

Saeed: It seems a majority of these bullets have shed their petals. Have they been shot out of some of your 404 wildcats at higher velocity, or has it just been circimstance that they were recovered that way? An impressive collection for sure!

I have shot several buff with the X bullet and much more plains game with it. You will be completely satisfied with the bullet if your shot placement is good.

If given a choice between Swift A-Frame and Barnes X for buff, which one would folks prefer?

For Buff or most anything else ...where a solid is not warrented....I use the Barnes TSX and North Fork's bullets...I cleaned out about ever other producer's bullets I had in favor of those two..

My vote goes to the TSX. It is more accurate in all of my rifles than a Swift, and it penetrates better too.

Have either of you used the TSX on buff (or any other thick skinned game for that matter)? If so, what can you report on its performance? Thanks.

Barnes "X" every time. But be careful in herds because the barnes will completely penetrate most of the time

Yes...and according to Barnes I may have been the first to use the TSX on Buff, certainly among the first...in September 2004.

I used a 458 Lott loaded to 2250 fps...out of three Buff taken, I only recovered one bullet...that shot was slightly quartering face on shot..bullet entered one shoulder, went length ways through the Buff breaking the back leg...found against the hide...that bullet weighed 499grains, started out as 500grains, and was a perfectly mushroomed "X".

On side on shots the Lott/TSX completely penetrated...good stuff...I use them in everything from a 308 win to 458 Lott, on everything from Bobcat, Deer, Zebra, Buffalo

I shot a 9' 3" Coastal brown with a 225 gr X bullet at 150 yds through the shoulder lodging in the skin on the oppisite side retaing 85% of the weight. No second shot was necessary. The Barnes x or TSX bullet is a killing bullet and the new MLX will be even better with the new tip and tungston bond in the rear.
