Was the impala set upon by anothr buck when he went down??/

It's a bank shot! i.e. a ricochet. Bullet hit something else before hitting the animal. Maybe a rock, branch, antler etc.

Buzzards found the impala and began to feed prior to the hunters finding the animal.

Or a chupacabra

The hydrostatic pressure of the shot was so much that it ripped a part of the hide free along with blood, tissue, bone etc...?

I'm buying in to the Chupacabra theory.

The poor beast picked an untimely moment to stop at a man-augmented waterhole. Following the fatal shot, it had enough steam to run smack into part of the water supply system, thereby losing a patch of its hide. - EB

Having gotten half way through your 2005 video I must say you are a lucky fellow to have such an entertaing companion as Walter.
As to the cause of the wound, well I think the bullet had been fiddled with. Were slits in the form of an x cut into it?
My 2cent guess.

Were the impalas in rut? A second ram came over and got his last licks in before this one expired.

The shot was through brush or bush, the bullet took some lumber with. If walter wanted to beat it to death a 2 x 4 would have worked just as good...

That's my guess and Im sticking with it.

Wild guess:

Acute angle shot, shoulder causing deviation in flight path for at least a part of the projectile that made an exit wound close to the entrance, causing the entrance and exit wounds to be so close as to rip a nice peice of flesh out.

In this scenario, what likely killed the animal was shock - shock from the fact that Walter actually hit it.

The other guess would be that the bullet "split" inside the animal separating into 2 large pieces traveling in the same direction, exiting at the same time.

Third scenario. This would have been caused by shame - the knowledge of Walter's skills amongst the beasts of Africa combined with the fact that this animal was hit by Walter (probably just a flesh wound) left only one course of action. After being hit, the animal committed suicide by impaling itself on a large pointed object (perhaps Walter's head).

Walter managed to bounce a bullet off the impala’s horn which resulted in the extraordinary wound.

Guess NO. 3. The impalla was feeding with head up. Right antler was resting on shoulder. AS bullet and debris passed through it hit and deflected off the Right Antler, grinding or cutting the skin patch.

In another thread, you talked about having problems with the bullet denisitys because of problems with the copper.

Could the bullet have completely dissolved (blown apart) upon impact causing a huge exit hole that ripped the skin completely off.

The impala was feeding, and had his head down when he was shot.

As the bullet came out, it hit the horn, and the result was as you can see.

Never mind. The chance of getting hit by lightning is probably greater than the chances of that shot. Perhaps Walter should be dubbed "Lightning"....

I have had this happening to me once before too.

I shot an impala that was feeding, facing away at an angle. The bullet hit him behind one shoulder, and got out the other side, blowing one of his horns completely off!

It did not cause as much damage to the skin as this one did, though.
