Courteney Boot Question

Going to be in Zimbabwe this Sept. and will have some time to kill. Courteney makes some of their boots in Elephant leather. Can these be purchased there and brought back to the US legally? Thanks for any help.

No. If you check the US Customs and USFWS display case in the ATL international terminal, you will find a pair of confiscated elephant Courtney boots along with other animal products seized there

Have been to the US a couple of times, always wearing Courteney shoes. No elephant leather but buffalo and antelope. Nobody ever asked me about my shoes. Just wear them in Zimbabwe and when flying. Nobody will ask you about your dusty boots.

Roll of the dice, depends on the customs agent who is in the booth. I bought mine in '08 at Fahads in Bulawayo, wore them back to ATL. Went thru customs very early in the morning. The agent glanced at my boots and said "Nice boots" and waved we thru. He knew but didn't care. YMMV

I bought mine in Vic Falls about 2005. Wore them home and i have worn them in and out of the country on at least 8-9 safaris since then. I even had a customs agent in LAX complement me on a nice looking boot. However, i realize it is a crap shoot every time and i may come home barefoot one day. I had another make me dip them in disinfectant solution and wipe down the upper in ATL. It just depends on the individual agent....

I must be unlucky..I wear my Courteneys in/out of the country and every time they make me take them off for a dip and seem to eye them suspiciously. I've tried leaving them dusty and cleaning them up with leather protector..either way I feel I'm just about to lose them each time.

Went over to the Customs and Border Protection office at Dulles to get a 4457 for my most recent rifle and took my boots with me. I had inked a serial number in using a sharpie. CBP had no problem adding "pair elephant boots s/n XXXX" on my 4457. No problem on re-entering USA.

Am having a pair of western boots made in elephant (bottoms) and ostrich shin skin (shaft) and will have the bootmaker put a s/n on and do the same.

I have a pair of Russell's made out of hide from my 2011 bull. Last year I was questioned about them, but the agent was satisfied with my explanation and the "Russell" tag in the shoes. I bought an ele leather culling belt in Zim in 2013, but now fear taking it back to Zim and losing it on the way home to customs.

You can get ele leather boots made right here in US...I have several pair.

Those Courtney tire like soles with the deep lugs are good traction for deep snow, deep mud or deep sand but on hard wet or icy pavement it is wipe-out city.I think they are just for looks.

don't think i have had a safari where i had to walk on wet, icy pavement. But i have had several where i walked in deep sand and they worked great....

How often do you walk in deep sand in your life to need footwear especially?? made for that? Besides that sole is a problem almost every place else.I wore them yesterday for at least 100 steps and my feet thanked me for taking them off.

I don't need Courtneys to go on safari.Thankfully I know better.Best thing to wear on safari is a comfortable pair of running shoes.I bought my Courtney's to wear out in town in the city in the winter slush.

Courtneys are comfortable boots, I wore them for awhile, but they are mostly the "in thing", they are not that well made, and they have 0 arch support..I would much prefer a pair of Justin lace up boots which is what I hunt in along with a pair of walking tennis shoes or the Justin ropers..In Tanzania and much of Africa you are obliged to walk in a good deal of water and the tennis type shoe drys out fast...but to each his own, just that there are options..
