A survey on 270, 300 H&H and 375 H&H

Mike375A survey on 270, 300 H&H and 375 H&H
Let us say that you are going to be given a custom rifle (bolt actions only)in your action choice, stock choice etc.
You can have it in either 270, 300 H&H or 375 H&H.
What caliber would be your first choice, second choice and third choice.
If neither of these 3 calibers were your choice , then what other caliber would you choose.
So we have 2 answers:
1) 270, 300 H&H, 375 H&H in what your order would be.
2) A caliber that is not one of these 3 in the event that neither the 270, 300 or 375 turn you on. If either the 270, 300 or 375 is for you, then no caliber listed for this question.
Thanks.
Mike

I hunt, not to kill, but in order not to have played golf.
For question # 1 I would go with 375 H7H, 300 and then 270.
For question # 2 I would have to go with a 7mm Rem Mag.

Mike375MAC,
I just changed the second question as it was not clear. Would you now list 7 mm Rem (that is, you prefer it over either the 270, 300 or 375) or leave question 2 blank.

<allen day>Mike, I would choose these cartridges, in order of preference, for chambering in custom-built hunting rifles. Actually, I've already done it!
1) .300 Winchester Magnum
2) .375 H&H Magnum
3) .270 Winchester

<Hitman>I have the .270, 300 H&H and 375 H&H in custom rifles made with the wood, action of my choice. I had them built in this order. The .270 because I was going sheep and antelope hunting the followin year of its completion. I then later had the .375 H&H built becuase of planned trip to Africa in the very near future. The last one was the .300 H&H because, I felt it was a truly classic caliber and I could with modern powders approach the performance of the .300 weatherby without excessive pressures and recoil. I wanted to take a big elk with the .300 H&H and which I did.

Santala1)375 H&H, 300 H&H, and 270 would be my order of choice.
2)If I were to get a nice custom rifle in my choice of caliber it would be the 7X57. Love that little cartidge.

GeorgeSQ1. .300H&H, .375H&H, .270
Q2. .416 Rigby
George
Mike, I would choose the .375 then the .375 and lastly the .375. The first one for target shooting and practice. The second for most game and the last for dangerous game. There, I have all the bases covered. And I bet you can guess what my answer is for the second question.

Q1: .375H&H, .300H&H, .35WH
Q2: .338WM

375 H&H, 300 H&H, 270W
Depends on what you want to use them for, but my collection is pretty good with the smaller calibers, so I'd be looking for something with the larger muzzles first.
So did I win? If so email me and I'll tell you where to ship all three rifles. I'll even be pretty flexible with the action and stock choices, but I'd like the 375 in a classic Rigby style please.
If I HAD to stay with JUST these three calibers, the order of build is:
1. 300 H&H
2. 270 Win.
3. 375 H&H.
If I can choose my own it would be:
1. 300 Wby.

<Don G>375H&H
270Win
300H&H
I'm lost on the second question, but when in doubt "30-06 Springfield"!
My choices
#l. 300H&H, .270, No desire for a .375
#2. .22/250 on a laminated stock. I know this is not a caliber for Africa but I like them & don't have one at this time.
For #1, I would only go with the .270.
For #2, I would go with a .30-06.
01 May 2001, 13:37
<JohnT>Mike,
For #1, .375, .300 H&H , .270
For #2, Not applicable as I love the .375 but the .300 WSM sounds promising.
Regards,
John

<T. Kanaley>#1 Funny you should ask that question. Just put in an order with Dakota a little more than month ago for two engraved 76's. The first one will be in 300 H&H and the second in 375 H&H. I'll pass on the 270 though.
#2 257 Weatherby.

<Talus>Mike,
Right now .375, then .300, then ,270.
Reason? Romantic nostalgia, plus I already have the .270 I like.

loud-n-boomer1) .375 H&H, .300 H&H, .270 (if I have to)
2) I hate the .270, please give me a .280 instead. Its not logical, its just me!!!!
1. 300H&H (Allready have the blank, will put it on my new Brno602 458 when that time comes). 375 is a "between caliber" of no need and little interest, Ill build a 9,3x62 Improved for my father this summer. 270? Why????
2. 50 BMG Improved (NO joke). AKI

Singleshot03Question #1 300 H&H, 270 and 375H&H
Question #2 275 Rigby & 416 Rigby
06 October 2009, 05:08
N E 450 No2I would pick the 375 H&H first, followed by a 308.
I would not want a nice custom 300 Mag, as usually when I use a 300 I want a plastic stock.
I am either in bad weather or on a horse.
This is one of the reasons I like the Blaser R 93...
I can put ANY of my barrels, on my nice wood stocked, gold animal engraved, reciever.
If the weather is bad, or I am on a horse, I can go "Plastic" with ANY of my barrels...

Charles_HelmIs this a record? Resurrecting an eight year old thread?

Brooks CarmichaelI have all three in custom rifles. I consider myself lucky to have them. The order I had them built in are:
270
375 H&H
300 H&H
Never regretted order in which I had them built. With the 270 I killed a Dall sheep in NWT, The 375 went to the Grizzly bear in British Columbia and finally the 300 for Elk in New Mexico.

Bo RichI too have all three in Custom rifles based on the Pre'64 Model 70. Your not gonna go wrong with any of the three. If you hunt more deer, and pronghorn go with the .270. Elk, Moose, and bear go with the .300 H&H Mag., Dangerous game go with the .375 H&H Mag. Or, get all three, and you would be set for anything! I couldn't even pick one out of the three since I like them all.

rnoviBack from the Dead!

I went with .375 H&H...and have the 7x57 is next. And that pretty much covers it!

375 (Have one)
270 (Have several by Goudy, Manley, Biesen, others)

Use Enough GunWell, the original survey was before my time. I too, have those three calibers, all in custom rifles, and all built on Model 70 actions. And, I've used them extensively. So, with that said, I agree with the majority here:
.375 H&H
.300 WSM
.270
And then as to the second question: .325 WSM as an addition to the list, as they all turn me on.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.
Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.
