Zimbabwe Questions
What is a "campfire area"? I keep hearing this term.

It seems to me that hunting in the Save Valley and Bubye is a more desirable proposition than hunting outside them. Is that reflected by lower prices for outside?

Africa in general has become a place where you "get what you pay for" and Zimbabwe is no exception.

Very good, and reputable Outfitters and PH's operate in the Conservancies you mentioned, but you can add Nuanetsi (Chifuti Safaris) and Buzz and Myles to that list of top Zim operators. The later are personal friends of mine and highly recommended.

The Campfire areas, what I have seen since 2007, are what I will call marginal communal areas, but some good trophies come out of them every year. I just cannot see them being operated with the same funds, vigor and dedication as for example Dande, Bubye,Nuanetsi and the Save.

A wise quote I read to today.......

"Only a rich man can afford a cheap Safari"

The Zim operators on here will give a more detailed explanation.....or not Big Grin

Campfire is an acronym. I would probably mess up what it stands for exactly. I won’t try.

Basically, a communal area is paid to set aside a certain area for hunting. The wildlife is supposedly protected in those areas. People, livestock and crops are not supposed to be in the area set aside as I understand it. These are communal areas. The Save and the Bubye are private areas.

A huge portion of the income in one of these areas comes from hunting. If elephants are involved, I am told as much as 70%.

Plenty of GREAT PHs and operators operating in both the Bubye and Save-Martin Nell, Shaun Buffee, Mark Bristo, John Sharp, the Duckworths, Thierry Labat, Roger Whitall and many others. I would hunt, or hunt again, with any of them! tu2

I never would have guessed an acronym.

So, no humans in the campfire areas and they're a subset of the tribal lands?

Is all the hunting in tribal areas done in Campfire areas? Are they supposed to be better than outside those areas?

Outside those areas on communal land??? One would struggle to find the odd kudu.

CAMPFIRE is a hugely successful model that evolved from policies in place during the Rhodesian days. Its main strength is that by ensuring that rural communities benefit directly from hunting they can be brought on-sides in conservation initiatives and anti-poaching. It works.
