I can imagine what they might say if I wear a pith helmet!

lavacaNever worn a pith helmet, but have worn an equally ridiculous looking cloth floppy broad brimmed hat.
At least it doesn't take up much space in the suitcase, but it does keep the sun off your face and neck like a pith helmet would.

Michael RobinsonI prefer a fitted, camouflage printed, Boston Red Sox baseball cap.
It keeps the Yankees and other assorted, low class varmints away.

I resemble that remark, although I'm just a yankee, not a Yankee.

NakihunterMy dad joined the Indian Forest service in 1947. He used to wear a Pith Helmet in the field until around 1966.
He shot tigers and leopards in the 50s while wearing one.
In 1966 he went on a United Nations / FAO project to Africa, Middle East & the Mediterranean. I think he found there that the old fashion of wearing pith helmets was long gone and he started wearing the green canvas / cotton hats.
Many forest officials in India still wore pith helmets well into the 1980s.
I remember them as clunky and painfully uncomfortable as a kid.

CharlesLI prefer my Tilley. Packs flat and pops right back out. I also prefer my fishing shirts, but afraid to take them on safari. The laundry service would probably ruin them.

And, you can stash some cash in the top pocket for a rainy day or emergency.

Balule120 years after the end of the Anglo-Boer War I would still consider it as a target rather than eccentric headgear.

Capt.PurvisGet a kaki shirt, long shorts and knee high white socks to go with it. Also a 18 inch riding whip as your accessory.

Michael RobinsonI have reconsidered.
Go ahead.
At least you'll have a pot to pith in.

PeterThere is American hunting and then there is British hunting.
This is my grandad. On the back, the picture says "March 1931, going to hunt Nilgai".
BTW, grandad is the one on the horse!
I never knew him. Maybe we will hunt together sometime.
https://imgur.com/YRT68FdBTW it is not a one eyed spectacle, it is called a "monocle"!

PeterThank you Nitro, and BaxterB! Please do not take this wrongly, but seeing as we are talking about the British Raj, the correct term is "pukka"!
