zimFrostyMore Buffalo and Elephant have died from 308 and 303 rifles than anything else. The old hunters and poachers used them extensively in days gone by. I would also venture to say that more animals have been wounded and got away by the very same calibres.
I once put a Huge Eland Bull out of its misery ,caused by a broken back leg, with a 223 at 100yds. I know a well respected Hunter that shot an Elephant with a 30-06. I also know plenty of PHs and clients that have shot Buff and Ele (and other stuff) with the biggest calibres you can find.....and never found them.
I guess its about more than putting the bullet where it has to go. Its also about being confident in your weapon and your own abilities, and maybe the most important thing is being as ethical as you can about it and using the caliber that you and your PH feel is best suited to the particular animal you are hunting. No one likes to wound an animal if it can be avoided in any way possible
