Looks like a young pride of sub adult cubs in training. Note the bare patch above the tail of porcupine - all the loose "shooting" quills have fallen off. Those are the most deadly quills along with the solid tail quills that cause the most damage.

With the loose quills gone, an adult would have flipped the porcupine and killed it with one bite to the under parts.

In India tigers have been known to get hurt with porcupine quills in their paws, face, chest etc. But it is common to see leopard scat with porcupine parts in it! Hardly any instances of a leopard getting hurt.

Found a nice pile of quills one time. Lots of tracks. No blood, so the porcupine obviously fared well. Suspect it was a similar incident.

Is this porcupine related to Randals Honey badger?

I once could've taken a porcupine in SA. I didn't want to make the skinner go through that. Although it would've been an incredible mount, I have more respect for them now.

They are a big problem when your gun dog flushes one, theoretically we should be able to call the dog off or have them sit. But the young dogs learn some very painful lessons when they run full speed into a porcupine that is reversing into them with those quills; they often get a couple inches of penetration.

However some of the terrier breeds learn how to flip them over and kill them very easily.

My lunatic Jack Russells always took a bit of a hammering when bailing porcies underground. One bitch, "Maggs" used kill them where ever she found them then come to me have the quills pulled with only a little growl of complaint.

Bobcats are pretty skilled at eating them here in Texas. 45 works better Smiler Little sticky bastards chew up all the water lines going to animal water troughs. Evidently they like black plastic.
