anybody here shot anything big with the barnes MRX yet? I'm wondering with the tungsten core how the thing does in penetration on large animals.

The only animal I have shot with one is a whitetail with a .300 RUM. He was quartering towards me at about 80 yards; the bullet entered at the point of his right shoulder and exited his left ham with near straight line penetration. I would definately be comfortable using them for plains game.

Butch, not much help, but I have used them. Shot two whitetails and a 500 pound hog with the 225gr 338 bullet from a 338-378. No chance of recovering any of them. Blew through both shoulders of the hog and kept on going.

Let's see...I shot a deer at a bit over 200 yards on the posterior aspect of the left rear leg with a Berger 115 gr. VLD out of a 25/06. The deer died promptly and a lot more cheaply than if I'd shot it with an MRX.

In addition, the Berger VLD is very accurate unlike the MRX which came about last in accuracy in a recently published test in Handloader magazine.

I could go on but I won't. Go ahead and pay a buck a bullet.

No argument with the accuracy on the MRX. That was the first and last box I ever bought.

butchloc - I used 180 grain MRX in .30/06 this last August/September on Namibia PG hunt and took six animals (zebra, kudu, oryx, red hartebeest, steenbok, and springbok) all with one shot each. All shots were pass thru's except hartebeest which lodged under skin on far side.

I was impressed with the performance and accuracy out of my rifle (Cooper Model 52) and will post a picture of the expanded MRX from the hartebeest when I get off my hind legs and do a hunting trip report this month.

To date only 30-06 w/150's behind 58 gr H4350 is my sole bit of experience. Took four 150ish porkers last weekend. Three were DRT with double shoulder pass throughs and very little damage. One hit a little low and thru the brisket, he made it forty yards before giving it up. Very accurate in this rifle a pre 64 winnie. I have tried them in a 300 Win Mag but still working on the load for it.

Shot a whitetail in MT. Also double pass-through. Found the plastic tip in the entry wound and a bit of a petal in the exit wound. Deer was DRT. They're accurate in my .300 Wby., but I don't think they're doing much the TSX won't do for my purposes.

The ONLY advantage to them over the TSX bullets is that they're shorter so allegedly will stabilize better. Also when you start getting fancy with tungsten cores, etc. it's a bit easier to make a bullet that's a bit out of balance.
