Tanzania: Lioness Attacks Four Men in Loliondo District
By Marc Nkwame, 20 May 2013

Longido — FOUR men have been admitted to hospital in critical condition after they were attacked by a lioness in Longido District at the weekend.

One of them, Jacob Sadira, who is undergoing treatment at the Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre, is the worst affected, having suffered a ripped right arm and numerous injuries to the body. He has also lost a lot of blood. The other three victims include Lemberwa Olenapurda, Toto Olenapurda and Orpenear Ole Nangokole.

They were rushed to the Kitumbeine Lutheran Hospital in Longido District and are reported to be doing better. Their injuries were not as serious as those of Sadira.

According to a local elder, Mr Jamboi Baramaegu, the incident occurred at Orkeju- Loongishu Village, Kitumbeine Ward, Longido District, Arusha Region when a pride of four lions entered the village and headed straight to a cattle enclosure. "It was rather strange because lions usually hunt at night.

But this pride came in the morning when most of the village's livestock had already been taken out to graze in the field," said Mr Baramaegu. As it happened, there were only new-born calves in the cattle enclosure when the lions attacked. The lions had already jumped into the cattle pen when some villagers spotted them and raised the alarm.

Soon four men armed with spears, clubs, swords and machetes rushed to the scene and began attacking the big cats. Seeing the Maasai warriors, three of the lions jumped out of the cattle pen and fled into the wilderness but the fourth beast, a lioness, decided to put up own fight and attacked the four men.

The lioness picked one target and went down with him. It took all the effort from the other three to save their colleague. In a fit of rage, the lioness left the badly injured person and turned to the other three, also mauling them badly until more villagers arrived at the scene and jointly succeeded in chasing the beast away.

For now. Unfortunately the pendulum will swing heavily in the other direction in the very near future.

Yep. All the Lions will pay for this. They have little tolerance and no respect for wildlife. Now they have the justification needed (in their minds ateast) to poison the entire pride.

I'm not sure how to take some of the replies here...Four men, Masai, no less, attempted to kill a lion that was set to attack their livestock- - - In daytime and in plain view. That's one bold, dangerous, and, yes, doomed, lion. Unfortunately, its gotta go. Otherwise, have we not become the "antis" ourselves? Ask most western US ranchers what they would do. I know a rancher in California who had a 'protected'(mountain) lion kill a few too many heifers, so he invoked the "3 S's": Shoot, Shovel, and Shut Up. Life in the wild. It's tragic that those villagers MAY kill other lions not involved the daytime, in-town, so to speak, maiming of 4 men. Let's continue to support SCI, lion research, and African hunting and hope we can help reduce collateral lion deaths.

In such scenarios there is no "MAY" but "WILL" and there is no single culprit - they do the whole pride if a pride is involved.

I have reservations that 4 Maasai went after the 4 lions - they don't have enough balls between them to take on that challenge! There might be more to the story than we're being told.

There's often more to every story but I have known plenty of Morani who would have jumped in there alone, never mind with three mates.

Then you need to refresh yourself on the habits of the Masai and come see for yourself!

I have been amongst them for many years - yeah, I'm pretty long in the tooth and when I say the Morani of today don't have the balls of their forefathers I pretty much know what I'm saying.

To each his own.
