Cabelas Bulletproof Gun Case

CrowkillerCabelas Bulletproof Gun Case
I'm leaving for Africa next month, and plan to use a Cabelas Bulletproof gun case for carrying my rifle.
Cabelas Gun Case Is the securing rod and one padlock enough for security, or should I use 4 padlocks and ditch the rod? 4 padlocks look more secure, but I'd like another opinion.
Edited to add: I have the case, just want to know the best way to lock it.

CrowkillerMine has wheels, and one long locking bar. i've seen others with two short bars on each end, I'd feel better with that.....

David CulpepperI would go with the one with wheels also, much easier getting around the airports. I would ditch the rod and go with 4 pad locks, the more secure the better.

I never thought about ditching the rod and going with extra locks...
Sounds like a good idea...
I need to buy some pad locks, what kind are you using?

larrys01I think you would be happier with one that has wheels. Also I like the shorter Pelican Cases that require the Rifle be taken apart. They travel better in the Bush Planes and Hunting Trucks and are easier to get thru the Airprts with. Also they weigh less which is nice with the 50 lb per bag weight limit at the Airports.
Just my .02 cents worth.

CA Safari HunterI have that exact one. I have flown to South Africa, Kodiak, and Texas with it. No problems. It’s a great case.

I have an ICC case much like yours. It has two shorter bars, so I use two padlocks. Funny though, I have sometimes wished it had one long bar so I could use just one lock. Go with whatever feels best for you.
I carry two extra locks in mine in case any are cut off. So if you remove the bar, you may want to carry multiple extras.

I use a case with the long rod and haven't had a problem with it. I also put an extra lock in the case to be used if the outside lock has to be cut. Downside to using multiple locks is having to open the darn things for inspections. Sounds like a hassle to me but I guess that depends on how many times you have to open it.

NavalukI had a similar case from cabelas but it had 2 rods. I used the rods and 1 lock each.
On my trip to Namibia, the apes handling the luggage either opened the locks or destroyed them and I lost one of the rods.

retreeverIf you are taking padlocks, I would purchase combos and you can use consective numbers for the last digit...
Remember to ask for a TSA to inspect it and then lock it and have them put a seal on it...

Wheels only add weight in my opinion.
I always get a cart at the airport since I am taking a gun case, check in bag, and a carry on.
Just easier this way.

The Cabelas case looks very much like the one I bought about 10 years ago from Kalispel Case Line (Kalispel Indian Tribe- Cusick,WA). In fact, I have wondered if Kalispel was subbing to Cabelas. My case has made four trips to Alaska, one to Canada and one to Namibia and has so far been bullet proof. This in spite of an idiot luggage handler on the tarmac, who seemed intent on destroying its contents. (I watched him out the plane's window as he bodily heaved the case about 8'-10' through the air onto the conveyor carrying luggage into the plane's hold. He was treating all of the luggage the same.) I also got a black nylon cover for it. When I got it they were not available with wheels; now they are. There is also a wheel kit available now and, a couple of years ago, I got one and installed it. An extra lock or two inside the case or in accompanying luggage might be a good idea. Four locks in place of the bar seems to me like maybe overkill, but do it if it makes you more comfortable.

When we were leaving for last months safari I asked for a TSA inspection at the ticket counter in Philly. The ticket agent stated that TSA didn't do that any more and instructed me to stay near the counter for a few minutes while the case went thru TSA screening.
I know they didn't open the gun case because it was secured with Master "Contractor" grade padlocks, but a few minutes later one of the United employees waved at me and said we were good to go.
Everything worked out OK and my guns made it to RSA safely. When we returned to the US (Dulles) the guns had to be carried thru Customs (they didn't look at them) and then re-inspected by TSA. Once again I was asked to stay near the baggage drop off for a few minutes until I was told I was "good to go" on to Philly.

The Cabelas cases are made by ICC. Kalispel cases are nearly identical. I almost wonder if they don't make cases for ICC. Both companies are in Washington. I have cases from both Kalispel and cabelas, If it were'nt for the label I would swear they are made by the same company.

JudgeGMy case works well and has been on several safaris. I did get a piece of foam the dimentions of the case and cut out silhouettes of the taken down rifles, placing them within the cut-outs so they wouldn't slide in the case.
I learned the hard way that a rifle will slide in most any case and when the stock or barrel touch the edge of the case, damage can occur if the case is dropped. Many cases now come with Velcro straps, a welcome addition, IMHO.

onefunzr2Cabelas is certainly getting its mileage out of 'bulletproof.' My plastic Starlight 2 gun case was their 'bulletproof' model 5 years ago!
Talk about false advertising...touting this new aluminum case as having heli-arced corners...I'd bet the farm that argon shielding gas was used on those TIG welds. Using the arcane term heli-arc is laughable and probably only understood by grey-haired folks as the term went out of common usage decades ago.

zimbabweSome of us ARE 'old folks' (75) and to me ALL inert gas welding is Heli-Arc and always will be no matter WHAT the young punks call it. I have the same case and it has given good service. I have the one with wheels and believe you me it is welcome in airports like Atlanta that require you to travel long distances between airlines. That's just for us 'old folks' of course. The one lock has never been any concern to me personally. Takes very little more time to cut off 4 locks with boltcutters as it does one and you have to take them off and on to check in.

Die Ou JagterYou can buy Master locks in sets of four with the same key thus only one key buy and extra set for replacements. I use a Tuffpac but use the master locks on my duffel. I also have an ICC which I used for many years befre the TP (more versital) and only used one lock and the rod. Have a great trip and DON'T WORRY!

HighbrassYou will be very happy with that case I have been using the same case for over 10 years. The single bar and lock are plenty but carrying a spare is a good idea. I had a local trim shop make an outer cover to provide some insulation from baggage handlers and it has helped to protect the case itself although it has been through the wringer. I typically will use a cart and don't care for the wheels... Somthing else to break... Good luck

LabmanI've used one for a total of 7 trips to africa and more in the US. It's still holding up fine.

KK Air is now owned by ICC Impact. Same fine quality. I have one of each.
I use one lock, a Sesame combination with a case hardened shackle. So far, so good.
