fairchaseAfrican Birds
Do any of you know of a good field guide for birds of Southern Africa (limpopo area)?
I would like to learn about more about some of the non-game wildlife before my first trip. The birds seem like a good place to start, because they are so visible. Thanks.

kayakerHi there, there are many,
go to an online book seller like amazon or
www.kalahari.net (which is in SA) and look for 'Roberts Birds', 'Sasol Field Guides' and 'Newmans Bird book', this is just a start...a quick look will reveal many, these three are very popular.
AGRED also has one just for game birds, too...

kududeThere are several, but I like Sasol's Birds of Southern Africa. Kudude

I have a copy of Southern African Birds by Ian Sinclair and have found it useful.

zimbabweIn addition to Newmans and Sinclairs there is a 'Pocket-guide to Southern African Birds' by Burger Cilie and Ulrich Oberprieler that is photos and is pocket size. Published by JL van Schaik. I purchased it years ago in the terminal bookstore in Johannesburg. The sticker says it was 78rand then which I think was in 2000. I thought it was a good investment then and have carried it ever since. I derive almost as much pleasure birdwatching there as hunting. I carry a heavy pair of 10x50 Swarozski's because of the birds not the game.

dogcatI used Birds of Southern Africa by Sinclair as my guidebook on two trips. I was very pleased and both PH's were avid birders. I added 150 or more to my life list and had a ball birding while hunting. I buy my guides in two places - abasales.com and buteobooks.com
Both have a great selection of books you can buy online.
