wood crates from zim outlawed??

I was talking to a taxidermist yesterday & he told me that they have some sort of an embargo on wood coming out of zim. This is holding up trophy shipments according to him. Evidently it's some sort of govt. nonsense. anybody hear of this yet?? Don't know if it's true or false, but if it's true it sure would be good to know something about it.

It wasen't in effect when they built my crate. I think they used every available piece of lumber they could get their hands on to build it. They still managed to lose a Klipie and Steenbok horn.

Sounds like bullshit to me. Ask him to show you his source for this 'information'.

NOT ZIMBABWE .... but this might be of interest to our guests possibly !!!

Our SA taxidermist conveyed the following to me recently ..

Unfortunately with the new ISPM 15 regulations on wood for exporting, All TIMBER needs to be treated either with a Heat Treatment or with Methyl Bromide before we can export the crates.

Now that sounds like a taxidermist or a gunsmith!!

However, inasmuch as wood is the only fuel used by the indigenous or Africa and they are cutting it down daily, there just might be more than BS to this thread, after all it is Africa.

I just received a trophy shipment from Zim from my hunt last July. Of course it was wood. The dip & pack outfit did mention that the wooden box and pallet type base had to be sprayed or treated in some fashion to kill unwanted hitchhikers, but other than that, no problem.

Wood from Africa is always inspected for "borers" by Australian customs and quarantine. Probably what they are looking at for these new regulations as well.

It does sound like something to do with treating the wood for the borers. I know the hoops that I go through to export product from the USA on wood pallets because of them.

There are two possibilities - ban on exportation of endeangered species of wood - requirements that wooden pallets be treated with pesticides.There are laws requiring use of pesticides though I don't know the details.One friend who imports from various countries says thqt wooden pallets are no longer common , they're being replaced by plastics, recycled stuff assume.

Hunting Trophy Queen

There is new government regulation effective in US on September 15, 2005 that all wood packaging material must either be heat treated or treated with Methyl Bromide. This is worldwide standard from IPPC - all countries have different implementation dates. Should not affect delays for shipping as most in Zimbabwe would be heat treated.
