MORE than 400 fields have had their crops destroyed by elephants in Mukuni village in Livingstone.
Mukuni Ward Councillor Godwin Lubinda said last week that elephants have destroyed more than 400 fields in Mukuni village.
Mr Lubinda claimed that several reports to the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) had allegedly yielded a negative response.
“Elephants have been terrorising fields in Mukuni village since time immemorial leading to some villagers abandoning farming.
It is embarrassing for the villagers to continue asking for relief food every year.
"We are tired of asking for food every year, all we need is a lasting solution to this problem.
ZAWA gave us fireworks to scare away the elephants but they (elephants) have become familiar with them (fireworks)," he said.
Mr Lubinda said the people of Mukuni were not in support of killing the elephants as a way to solve the problem.
He said even if elephants were a prerequisite to tourism development, there was need to put in place control measure that would keep them away from endangering human life.
Meanwhile, Mr Lubinda appealed to ZAWA to speed up measures of finding a lasting solution to the problem of elephants.
He said elephants have not only been terrorising fields but also attacking people in the area.

500grainsThis is not my fault. I was perfectly willing to shoot all of those heinous elephants before the damage occurred.
