londonhunterLand Hippo
Anybody booked a land hippo recently for the coming season or 2013?
What is the going rate and which area is recommended ?
I don't need to take trophy and happy to combine it with a croc or anything interesting

BiebsLH, you'll need to be specific with the outfitter that you want to take a Hippo on land. Many areas may not afford such an opportunity, It's a GREAT hunt if you can find it.
PS: If you have a 577 or 600 double to bring, you could call Mark Sullivan :-)

BiebsLH, wow, what is that you're working out...looks like either a 10ga shotgun or a REAL big DR! Yes, I shot one in the Caprivi with Karl Stumpfe, running up a bank with a side brain shot. One of my prouder moments. It is an awesome animal to hunt on land if you get the opportunity. I have no interest in shooting one out in the water, except maybe if bail was needed. I was on an Ele hunt, so the Hippo was for the tag only...$3,500 if I remember.

MJinesIf hunting a hippo on land was the top thing on my list, the only person I would contact would be Mark Sullivan.

Without a doubt.
But I would also then add 2 buff or spend 14 days going after Hippo on land and take 3 of them.
Ignore the detractors, this is Sullivans Game and he delivers.

D. NelsonMy husband took a hippo on land in Tazania with Tanzania Big Game Safaris, but that required a 21 day license. He used a .416 Rem. 400 gr TBBC.

BiebsYes, I know Pierre von Tonder may be able to arrange that as well. We had Hippo prints around our tents in the morning when hunting in his concession.

i agree. when hunting buff there in 2010, we had to constantly be on the lookout tracking in the jesse lest we bump into one accidently and end up in a short range charge situation- same situation with elephant.

Wendell, I believe this has already happened.
The "Land Hippo" now appears in the book just before the always elusive and ever dangerous "Land Shark."

londonhunterOk
How about if I put the question another way
Which type of hunt shall I book whereby a land hippo is likely to be on offer as an option ?
Does that make it easier ?
Does mark Sullivan still have a licence to guide nowadays ?
there are so many rumours doing the rounds about him I don't know what is the latest

MJinesAsk Mark yourself, here is his email address:
deathby600@aol.com
I have not hunted with him, but know others that have and they thoroughly enjoyed their hunts. I have spoken with Mark and he has always been a gentleman.

ExpressYourselflondonhunter...just saw your post about hunting hippo on dry ground. Send me a PM if I can assist you in any way with contacting Mark. It is my understanding Mark will be away until the later part of February (A little after the Eastern Sports & Outdoors Show) so you may get a delayed response via email.
I am not at liberty to elaborate but it may be that you can schedule a face to face with Mark not too far from your home in late April. Although he is likely fully booked, this might be beneficial if you are trying to hammer out details and arrange a hunt with him during calendar year 2012. Mark has access to many blocks in Tanzania and can most likely create the hunt of your dreams.
I have had the opportunity to get very close to hippo and of course many buffalo with Mark during our hunts. We won’t talk about elephant. I am still having nightmares (no fault of Mark’s). Although these types of encounters with hippo and buffalo can require some hard hunting, I do not think you would be disappointed if trying to get in close is your preferred hunting style. If getting close is not, simply let Mark now how you want to hunt up front and he will most certainly accommodate your preferences.

retreeverYes, Mark is still hunting Tanzania. He is presently at the eastern sports show in Pennsylvania. He is taking a friend to Tanzania for a 21 day safari in Oct.
Spoke to him every day I was there and was with him and friends at a superbowl party.
You can reach him thru his website.

Mad DogLondonhunter, I second what oz hunter said about Martin Pieters, the Omay, and lake Kariba. My son and I probably looked at 500 hippos over the course of 10 days. He took his on day 5 of that hunt, and it was on land. Here's 3-4 pics.
