(posted August 05, 2016)
Tanzania recently introduced a new requirement to import firearms for safaris. Hunters must now provide photographs of the firearm and of the serial number for any guns brought into the country. We learned of this new regulation from Bob Kern of The Hunting Consortium and confirmed it with Mike Angelides, Secretary of Tanzania Professional Hunters Association and General Secretary of Tanzania Hunting Operators Association.
Says Angelides, "Although there is no written law regarding the need for photographs of guns and serial numbers, authorities in Tanzania have communicated this regulation to TZPHA and TAHOA."
On a separate note, a subscriber recently wrote us after learning at the last minute that he would not be able to borrow rifles on a safari jointly operated by two companies, the reason being that only the operator conducting the hunt in a given area may provide firearms. In this case, the operator at one concession had no guns to lend, and the booking operator could not provide rifles because of regulations forbidding hunters from borrowing rifles from a third party.
Our subscriber's operator gave him the impression that this was a new regulation. Angelides says that this is not the case, and that third parties have not been able to provide rifles for years. If you plan to hunt with your operators' rifles in Tanzania, make sure ahead of time that rifles are available in accordance with Tanzania's regulations. -- Justin Jones, Assistant Editor

jdollarTz could f--k up a 1 car funeral procession. It's obvious that the safari industry is WAY down on the economic totem pole

fujotupuI have just mentioned the above to a prominent outfitter who says he knows nothing of this "new rule" and that he has not had to apply as suggested to any of his clients to-date.
Am not saying it is untrue but these new "regulations" have probably been conceived in the "Republic of Arusha"
What is true is that all residents have had re-re-re-register their firearms with mugshots for each and finger-printing for the umpteenth time.

Couldn't agree more with the "Republic of Arusha" thingy.....
It really does seem that the authorities are hell bent on making tourist hunting an impossible business. Perhaps they have a back up plan...

AtkinsonTanzania is IMO one of the last stands of African Safari hunting, A hunter who has not taken advantage of its game and type of hunting has certainly done himself no favor...
I agree, the black gov. of Tanzania has over priced the people who made it famous, and as a result the hunting in Tanzania has dwindled and only remains for those of great wealth, and the 21 day Safari. They have about priced themselves out of business. Practically done away with the 10 day 2 buff, and PG hunts..
That said the black Tanzania can live just fine on $600 a month or $150, 000 a year and probably never know the difference, so they are hard to deal with, don't have a clue on economics, don't care what works or fails, therefore I don't see it getting any better...Im not the last word in the workings of Africa, but I have been there and delt with the problem for year and thus it seems to me. I used to think Africa was corrupt, but today I see it as less corrupt as the USA, at least they take bribes on top of the table and they have no reason to lie. They just ask ya how much you willing to pay as opposed to blackmail. Naughty!
