Hwange NP
Could you folks tell me more about Hwange NP?

Considering it one of my options for a Photo Safari.

Is it a safe area to visit not like the problems one may experience lately like the Save?

Is the game abundant and potentially great for spectacular photo ops and such?

I think it may be a great destination to consider because there would be MUCH less
tourists and vehicles upon sightings/photo ops unlike maybe Kruger and Selous Game Reserve.

And of course staying with a great outfitter such as Martin Pieters would be great!

Yes, it is safe. Fly into Vic Falls, tour the Falls, photo tour Hwange, etc. That will be one great trip! tu2

You might also consider Mana Pools. At Mana, you can get out on foot to observe and photograph, not sure about Hwange.

My brother and i drove 3weeks through zim in 2011 of which 5days were in hwange.Pupblic Camps are pretty bad and roads are bad.we sleeped in the bush on a picknickplace, that was wonderful . The park has still a lot of game and i enjoyed it a lot. Never felt unsave in zim.

We took mainly small roads in the park and on somedays we didn't even see other cars.

Btw: If you drive youself and use only the small roads, you'd be suprised how few tourists you meet in the kruger but Camps in the kruger are very crowded.

Also stayed at The Hide in July, very nice & had a great time. Was a little disappointed in the number of animals seen. Like they said, lots of elephants.

Hwange Park looks like this right now. There are lots of elephants there. They eat everything they can reach.

Don't know what Main Camp looks like but this is a photo of what about 95% of Sinametella looks like.



You can't see from this photo but up on that hill are Baobab stumps. The elephants are eating Baobab trees that will not grow back in our lifetimes or our grandchildren's lifetimes.

Pretty devastated and barren are my initial reactions Eeker

It seems I have a lot more homework to do on Hwange.

That is "normal" elephant damage. You'll see that in parts of the kruger, chobe and many other places that have too many eles.

Again

If you are looking for a more adventurous trip with fantastic scenery, good but not great game sightings...you will see elephant (not like in Hwange, Chobe),waterbuck/reedbuck/oribi/warthog galore...good selection of other plains game (sable, kudu, nyala, impala), probably lion, buffalo maybe ..look at Gorongosa. I tell you in 10 years it will be packed with tourists. I am going in 2014.

It would not be so bad if this were "parts" of Hwange. Problem is that this MOSTof Hwange.

In August we visited Hwange park with Terry Anders of Forever Africa Safaris. He was displaced from Savuli due to the land grab. We hunted the Matetsi area and stopped in Hwange Park on our way to Bulawayo. Terry and Sheona Anders run photo safaris into Hwange as well as hunting safaris. We had a greaqt time. Hwange has alot of game. The only danger we were exposed to was the Mozambiquian spitting cobra in the womens toilet at the viewing platform. It had been in the toilet bowel for two weeks and the park officials told no one. Interesting. Give "Terry and Sheona a look on line. You will be pleased with their offerings.
