Re: Why are people so against the 45-70??
the 45-70 is the best rifle loading ever made for D/G

This is a curiosity to me.
One would think that serious hunters and gun enthusiasts would praise the revival of this grand ole cartridge.

Yet it seems many of the people you would expect to stand behind it's effectiveness and awesome power prefer to hold it in contempt.
There has to be a reason for that??????

Can someone enlighten me?
I can only conclude there is some kind of resentment factor.
Perhaps guys like 500grs spent $3-4000 dollars on some expensive big bore double barrel or single shot foriegn made rifle and hate the fact that a simple Marlin costing under $500 could do much better on D/G then their prize rifle?
This is the only logical answer.

I think that Saeed should start a new forum just for the 45-70. Then everyone who loves or hates the 45-70 can go there to argue their point.

I have nothing against the 45/70, but I am getting sick and tired of the same old arguments over and over and over...

I love mine but it isn't an appropriate caliber for everything under the sun as some would wish it was. Amen to that Mike.

The 45/70 is a great cartridge for black bear for close in shooting for non DG...Yes some have killed some critters with them but is it right to use a illegal firearm when not legal...
In Pa. where I hunt, 5 of my close friends use it for black bear where close shots are presented...Some shoot the 450marlin and penetration of 12 inches or slightly more is enough..
I really can honestly say I do not hate the 45/70...But use it for what it was designed for...IMHO

I've shot over 100 deer and still don't know what the best deer rifle is. One wonders how you know what the best dangerous game cartridge is.

Pick up a 45-70 with the right handload and you will know too.

Because it is not as powerful as some of you claim, and the fact that you make such claims is proof enough that you have not used it extensively on the bigger animals...

I love the old lever actions and they are fine deer guns at close range but I have shot enough of the big stuff with the 45-7os, 45-90s and 50s to know that they are not enough gun to use on big heavy animals and expect clean swift kills, and I can quote you instances all day long and even have much of those failures on film and its pathetic to watch as I beg guys like you to shoot the poor bastard again over and over....

These false claims of power are beginning to bore me to death by a bunch of folks that have not used them, and are making wild claims they cannot back up.....It is just BS on your part IMO...

Atkinson.
Fine then why not allow me to have my opinions and share them with whomever I wish?

Why does that make me a troll or whatever esle you called me?
Think what you wish and let the rest think what they wish.

I think you are an old coward and a thief.
But that is strictly opinion.

Dang, I wish you would quit making blanket posts like that. Stick with your precious African DG or something like that. I have shot a fair bit of stuff with slow .45s and they die very well thank you. Carve a 0.6" or bigger hole through anything and it will die quite satisfactorly. And a .45 will carve such a hole easily. If they haven't died for you - well, that's unfortunate - maybe your shot selection needs help.

I will not claim the .45-70 is the end all of anything, and I haven't used them on cape buffalo - though I surely would love the opportunity just for the shear joy of telling ya'll about it. But when it comes to things bigger than deer, like elk, they work just fine and dandy. Ray, you are the only person I see who claims otherwise.

I love my 45-70. I shoot it wtih 350 grain bullets at about 2100 fps and would use it for almost anything in North America. With the right loads I would use it for the big bears as well but I would choose something with a little more starch were I going to Afrika for cape buffalo. The right tool for the job is really the best course and sweeping generalizations are quite often a fools game.

Carmelo, opinions are fine, but should be made using some kind of experience &/or knowledge. Ray has hunted the big stuff, his "opinion" carries a bit more weight in this matter than yours. I like the .45-70, but think about it, @ factory loads it's not much more than a hot loaded .45colt from a handgun. If all I had was a Marlin in .45-70 I wouldn't let it stop me from hunting, but there are better tools for the job of DG here ro in Africa.

I've noticed a lot of rants, but no one really seems to want to deal with the question at hand.
And that is; why is there such an inate distaste for the 45-70 amongst a group of people that one would expect to be supporters of this wonderful round.
