The Official Score
Today I got an email from RSA. My kudu was measured at the following:

SCI

Length L: 59 4/8 R: 61 6/8
Circumference L: 9 5/8 R: 9 4/8

Total: 140 3/8

Darn near 62 inches on that right horn! I hope to have him back here soon. I need some mount ideas if anyone has suggestions.

The second photo really shows the beauty of the horns. You must have gasped when he came in and you saw the horns on him!

Ann,

Great kudu, congrats. A pedestal mount would look great. Maybe one wider at the bottom than the top, 4 or 6 sided.

Whatever you do with it you will smile every time you see it.

Curious, because I've never been to Africa, but what type of broadhead did you use to take that trophy?

Nick,

I am nearly settled. It's been a long and difficult move but I am liking the east a lot. Lots of varmints and deer. Coyote is year round here! Vermont has some pretty liberal gun laws, I don't think there are any laws?

SkyJacker I use Steelforce broadheads, 100 grain. Got a nice pass through on this bull. Other African game I have taken with them include baboon and warthogs.

In fact the warthog in my avatar was a archery pig taken in a different year but off the same property the kudu came from.

Vermont! WTF???

I was just going to post that you might want to get hold of Nancarrow's in Richville, by Frankenmuth. Bob has some sweet dark marble columns that he is using for pedestal mounts. Cheap to, I think it was $250 for one. I guess he had them shipped directly from Malasia or somewhere.

Anyhow, a little far of a drive for you now rotflmo

To get a old bull like this one with a bow is just awesome. It is really a beauty.

How did you feel when you walked up to him and you knew you bagged him?

Jaco,

I couldn't believe I got him. Had a pass through with the arrow and will never forget seeing it hit the mark. Kind of a slow mo vision.

The second photo above was as he was found. I just stood there looking at him for awhile before even walking up and touching him.

I do think regardless of size, at least for me, any time I am successful in taking an animal I go through the same feeling. I am always amazed and surprised.

Very beautiful and impressive animal. As for taxidermy ideas....send it to me Wink

How did you have the animal skinned? If you want a pedestal it should have been cut farther back. If it has been cut short, You can make a pedestal mount out of a shoulder form but it will not look as good and may appear front heavy and off balance. Look around at furniture stores, antique stores etc and you may find a nice piece that can be used as a pedestal base for a fraction of the cost of a custom made one. Just make sure they are complementary to the mount and stable enough to hold the mount. A bit of habitat on the pedestal such as grass, sand etc looks good to me. Also IMO they look best at a height that will place the kudus eyes close to your eye level.

Ann I had pedestal mounts done of my Kudu and Gemsbok and they unfailingly draw the most attention and awe from hunters and non-hunters alike. Do it! Get it done as a pedestal-you will never regret it !!!

Ann,

Congratulations -- that is a kudu that has everything.

Jochen Hein, whom I hunted with last month in Namibia, has a 63" kudu hanging in his dining room. His camp manager says she's been trying to get him to take it down, because it makes every client thinks he'll shoot one like that!

Would love to hear the story of the hunt in case I missed it.

John
