Is it winter in Texas?

A good reminder of the dangers of the "midday sun" by Joe Doggett of the Houston Chronicle, specially for those headed to the tropics this safari season.

Damn good reason (among others) to wear long pants and long sleeve shirts. You don't see those that live in the desert year round going about in short this and that.

Thats true! I lived in Malaysia as a kid and was BLACK the only thing white was my arse. I lived down at the pool with my mates and getting a tan was THE thing to do. Now days I don't go out in the sun without a hat and shirt and I make sure my kids are covered up as well.

Sun exposure in the past sure can come back to haunt you. A couple more interesting tidbits:

-one or two severe (blistering) burns in childhood can be all it takes to set you on the road to melanoma later in life.
-sunscreen does NOT necessarily protect you from the dangers of melanoma (it does protect you from basal and squamous cell CA, but few people die from them, compared to melanoma).

I'd recommend ANYONE with fair skin and history of sun exposure, in particlar burns, see a dermatologist yearly for a whole body once-over. Melanoma-in-situ, meaning pre-invasive, is cured by simple excision.

The official temp was 103 in San Antonio yesterday and so humid you could hardly breathe. Let the summer games begin!!
