Nyala

So, from some research I've found that Mozambique and Kwazulu Natal are the best places for the numbers and good size nyala. The more experienced hunter, my father, is leaning towards a trip to Botswana, Zambia, or Zimbabwe and I'm wondering if there are decent options in any of those? Free range/fair chase, at least 50,000 acre areas. any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

You have Free range in Malapati in Zim with Nixon.

Zambia and Bots is no option I think..

I'll second SSG Safaris! The 2 years I hunted with him, I saw a Nyala that will approach 34". I'm still kicking myself for not taking him.

I am not aware of any Nyala in Botswana??? I hunted at Kanana as well as with Tholo Safaris. No Nyala anywhere.

Andrew Pringle, Crusader Safaris, in RSA hunts all free range and takes huge Bushbuck and Nyala.

I would seriously consider Mozambique. I've killed nyala in South Africa and Moz and have seen them in several concessions in Zim. Moz had the best numbers and quality I have seen. Try looking at Mark Haldane's Zambeze Delta Safaris.

They do.

I shot one there, and saw many more.

The papyrus swamps around the Malagarasi River are full of them.

They live on some sort of grass that grows on the surface of the water. When you walk on it, it feels like soft foam. And you better not stop, as you will sink completely if you do not stop yourself by putting your arms out.

It is a rather funny feeling when that happens, and your feet do not touch bottom, just wobbling about freely.

Suddenly one remembers the large crocs one saw not long before cruising down the river less than 100 yards away!

We had an American friend with us hunting in Tanzania, when I shot a sitatunga.

We arrived back by boat, and he asked "did you get anything?"
"Yes, we got a nice sitatunga"

"A WHAT?"

"A sitatunga"

"What the hell is THAT?"

"It is a sitatunga. It lives in the swamps"

"Is this one of your jokes again?"

"No, I shot a sitatunga"

"Oh JEEZ!"

+1 BEST EXPERIENCE AND TROPHY QUALITY plus VERY IMPORTANT TO GET YOUR TROPHIES OUT.

I would be careful of southern Zimbabwe as skin might get damaged as stuff usually takes long to come out. I might be wrong.

South Africa still the best value for money and depending on where you hunt, a great experience. Our own Buffalo valley is now approx 20,000acres big and encompass 9,200 ha. Lord only knows how many Nyala we have in the hills and the river, but we shoot about 10 trophy bulls per year without a problem. Only two hours and a jog from Johannesburg.

Let me know if you need more information. If you can find a good outfit in Zululand it is always a good option, but can be tricky as some areas have been poached a lot.

For a "Dark Africa" hunt, do not look further than Zambese Delta Safaris of Mark Haldane.

I would second Buzz’s suggestion of the Duckworth’s Mozambique area in Coutada 9.

Very good nyala and a lot of other species in a wild area. You will see a LOT of game.

A few years ago Craig Boddington asked me about taking a good Nyala. He had hunted them but had marginal luck. I referred him to Mark Haldane's Zambeze Delta Safaris in Mozambique's Coutada 10 & 11. He's been back numerous times and he did get his good Nyala.

I hunted there a couple times back in the mid 2000's with very good luck on a number of species, including a Nyala and some new #1's with a handgun. Even took a Buff in the swamps with my S&W 500 revolver. Lots of good Nyala. Highest recommendation.

That’s what I was thinking. I don’t think there are nyala north of the Zambezi.
